Hello! 58bright or AKS, do you have an Airstream? If so, we would love to hear about them. If I know one thing, its that the Airstream community here loves "How it came to be yours" stories, what condition its in, what you plan to do, etc! lets hear it. Or just tell us how it came to be that you are a member here!

AKS & 58bright

We are Airstream newbies. Married and living in Vancouver WA - AKS(Nathan) and 58bright(Debra).
It was actually Debra that lit the Airstream flame. She's on fire now! She just came back from the mailbox screaming "The new Airstream Life magazine is here!! Woohoo!"

Debra had been searching online ads and newspapers for months looking for a small vintage Airstream she could restore. She found it. A 1958 18' Caravel. Only 4 weeks have passed since the purchase and the garage is full of parts; stove, refer, toilet, even the kitchen sink....heater, bunks, closet, etc. She has removed panels, ordered rivets, window seals, door gasket...She's gone crazy. What am i going to do?

OK..I will shut up and let 58bright share the stories and request some tips. She will also have some photos of this project soon. This forum is fantastic. So many tips here. Go Debra Go!

Stop by the trout lake rally - there are at least 2 vintage caravels that will be there - in various states of rehab. You will love your project when it finished!

New 1958 Caravel

My husband and I recently acquired a '58 Caravel. We had been searching Ebay and many online adds for over 6 months. We answered an online add. The gentleman said he purchased a vintage car (in LaGrand, OR) and had to take the '58 trailer with the car or no deal. He did not want to keep the trailer, only the car. I asked when I might be able to view the trailer. He said he would have to go pick up the car and trailer in LaGrand and drive it back to Olympia. Almost two weeks went by and I had not heard back from him so I figured he'd changed his mind.

The call finally came! We were second in line to purchase. First buyer was a no show. So my husband and I drove to Olympia as quickly as possibly. We were so excited! Couldn't believe it was finally happening.

We were not dissapointed. We got a great deal! The inside is in very good condition. Has all of it's original parts. Stove and fridge work. Don't know about the furnace yet. Wiring is a bit questionable. Small amount of floor damage at the entry way. The exterior has some hail damage. Also has a dent in the rear. Two broken windows, happened while in transport from LaGrande to Olympia.

Was told by seller that this trailer has only had one owner.

We have already started our restoration work. Looks like the original wood finish was pickled white. Has anyone else seen this wood finish before? Not sure if it is original.

We will be posting our project photos at... http://www.geocities.com/debra_bright/index.html

Now that we've heard the story of how you got it, we want to see pictures. The messier your garage - the better. You got the bug quick, not much immunity in your veins.
