Joplin area: check in...

With the outbreak of severe weather in Missouri and in many other areas of the country as well, especially with the devastation in Joplin, Missouri, I've had Airstreamers of this forum on my mind. I know we have many members who live in the southwest portion of Missouri, including Joplin. If you have time, please give us a heads up or check in so we know our "family" is well...or if you have information about damage or injury to other Airstreamers, you might let us know, respecting privacy of course. You're all in our thoughts and prayers today and through this weather outbreak. ~G

Thanks for putting this up, maxandgeorgia. Are you guys ok there? I'm very worried about some fellow Airstreamers and Air Midwest folks whose homes are near this area. Hopefully they were out on the road in their streams. God bless and protect them, please. We are praying.

We are fine, safe and undamaged. Thanks everyone for your concern. Our city is really hurt, devastation is awful, people are missing, some of our friends still accounted for. It pretty much took the heart right out of the city, there is no way to get from the south side to the north without going almost to Carthage and back. The high school is gone, St John's hospital is damaged beyond repair, it will have to be torn down and rebuilt. A large chunk of businesses on Range Line are gone, including Home Depot and Walmart supercenter. Whole residential neighborhoods are flattened. We just got power back this afternoon and internet just a short time ago. And the rain and storms continue. It's going to be a long night, not to mention a long time just searching and clearing the wreckage.

And it rains, and rains.

I don't know if there are any other forum members here in Joplin, if so, I hope they are all safe but internet is spotty and power is still off in a large portion of the city. There are survivors list of people accounted for.

Just saw the evening news. What devastation. Can not imagine how difficult and emotional this is for all experiencing it first hand. Our prayers to all and hope that the healing begins very soon. And also that the weather improves very quickly. Susan

Sandy, I only know you from your postings on the forum, but I am so glad to hear you are well. So much destruction and loss for your city and people. Do you have suggestions for what we should do to help? Is RedCross $$ donation the best way to go? Thanks for letting us know... You are snuggly held in our thoughts and prayers. ~G

I don't know for sure what to do yet, we are staying home for now and out of everybody's way. They have been sending volunteers home because there are too many. We are going to wait a day or two and see what is needed the most, and where we can best help. In the meantime, here is a link.

This link actually goes to the help Joplin page. or just go to www.helpjoplin.com

Isadora, we live in Alabama and were not directly affected by the April 27 storm, but many of our neighbors and friends were. There will be questions about debris removal, insurance, insurance adjusters, who's paying for what, FEMA registration, SBA assistance for homeowners, etc. The link below might be worth a quick read because many of your friends will have questions and needs. Skip past the first pages pertaining to Alabama.

I don't know you, but glad to hear you two are okay.

Disaster Assistance Handbook: (I realize this is directed to small business but this resource was most helpful to us in assisting friends and family with damaged residences) http://www.asbdc.org/Library/ASBDC_D...Businesses.pdf

We are in Harvest, AL and our home was destroyed by the F5 that went across North Alabama. Forget FEMA if you have insurance and a job. After being told by media, etc. to make sure we registered with FEMA, we got a form letter saying we didn't qualify. Was a total waste of time at a time when we were extremely busy dealing with the insurance companies, etc. For that matter, we're still wrestling with the insurance company. We got the primary structure paid for but still trying to get outside structures and contents settled.
