John Prine 1946-2020

Hard to believe that John Prine left us almost a year ago in April.

His music is still with us thankfully, and now seems like an appropriate time for him to have his own thread here.

The following interview is a good introduction to the man and how he got started IMO:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Prine

John has been mentioned all over the place on AirForums, including the OTRA I and II, Who Likes Guitar Music, and Guy Clark threads:

https://www.google.com/search?q=John...=airforums.com

Rest in Peace.

Apologies for putting the cart before the horse.

"Summer's End" is one of John's last songs.

It gathers his many themes into one small albeit sad bundle IMO.

My relationship with John Prine is an interesting one, in that I didn't know how much I loved him until years after I began listening to his songs. I grew up in a musical household, but we didn't listen to much recorded music. The only exception was that every road trip had a tape deck with John Denver on repeat. I grew to love those songs, but didn't learn until much later (college) that most of my favorites were written by John Prine. Now whenever I play those "John Denver songs" on stage, I make sure everyone knows where they came from.

Like this 1981 cover of John's 1971 Paradise?

Bob's JP original is in the previous post for comparison.

The YouTube comments under all these tunes are hysterical. A real "road trip" down "Memory Lane" for some of us seniors . . .

A reminder that you can click on the YT URL at the top of the frame for Full Screen etc. options, including reading the comments.

Thanks for the tribute to John. Definitely one of my all time favorites, and of the many tragic losses to COVID. I saw him in person more than a dozen times from 1982 until the summer of 2019, and he never failed to put on an extremely entertaining show. Absolutely great song writer.

I'm not quite so old that I wasn't in a smoky bar when John Prine was getting his start, and I never made it to see him live anywhere. But I have three adult kids (the youngest just turned 19), and during the past year they all have mentioned remembering John Prine playing on the CD during roadtrips when they were little kids in the backseat of the family vehicle... while even my younger acknowledged it, the older two were more appreciative of him forming a part of their personal musical catalog now. So there's that, at least.

The night he passed, I went and dug out a bottle of vodka from the freezer (had been in there for years), found the ginger ale, and actually had a lime in the house...

So much happened in 2020 and this first portion of 2021, I feel like I've been holding my breath, always waiting on the next shoe to drop, then the next.... I really don't think I've processed losing John, amongst so many others who are also gone.

Not humanly possible IMO . . . . . . thanks Bob . . . a fine live version which is great to watch on Full Screen. [via the YT URL at the top of that frame]

As always, the lyrics are kiiler material . . . what a mind . . .

"In spite of ourselves, we're the big door prize."

In the interview, while segueing from Steinbeck's writing [12:25], John talks about how the lyrics come to him, starting at time stamp 13:00, which should pop up here. [hot link in blue]

15:45 -- " . . . staring off into space . . . my little world . . . "

BTW the interviewer is a big part of the magic here IMO -- U.S. Poet Laureate Ted Kooser -- kudos to you, Sir.

Travel safe . . . and . . .

Abso-freakin-lutely. Actually, that one bears even more importance, because once on Spring Break in college I was thrust on stage by drunken friends to play harmonica with the poor guy playing guitar and singing. We were trying to figure out what we could play together, and "Paradise" came up, but I called it a John Denver song and he called it a John Prine song. Really my first realization of what was going on there.

Oddly enough, one of my favorite "John Prine songs" to listen to is actually not by him. I love this one so much...

How about a second cart to help lead the way in these strange times?

One of his best tunes ever IMO . . . with 2021 resonating well with the theme . . .
