PS -- Nice hat tip to Gordon Lightfoot in the audience at 24:30 or so:

https://youtu.be/w5Rkm_dqm7A?t=1468

He also appears briefly at the end. [~45:15 and 45:30]

Great kazoo playing by the entire audience!

PS2 -- A good Gordon Lightfoot documentary is linked in Post #594 of the OTRA II thread.

What a great performance at the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2019. On Full Screen [via the YouTube URL at the top], the video quality is superb, as is the audio.

Thanks!

PS -- Another good live version of Souvenirs is a duet with Steve Goodman in Post #20.

Great live explanation of this Prine/Goodman song . . .

Nice story, at the end, about finishing the song lyrics later.

"Well, a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song
And he told me it was the perfect country & western song
I wrote him back a letter and I told him it was
Not the perfect country & western song because he hadn't said anything at all about mama,
Or trains,
Or trucks,
Or prison,
Or gettin' drunk
Well he sat down and wrote another verse to the song"

Check out the closing lyrics that fill in those gaps!

https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/davi...ebymyname.html

. . . or listen carefully . . .

Saw him at Doug Weston’s Troubadour in the early 1970’s. I have been a fan since. Thanks for posting.

As a child of the 60s, my favorite musicians have always been poets who happen to sing their poems. John Prine is up there at the top. Sinatras they were not. Prine, Ry Cooder, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen and a passel of lesser knowns got most of my concert ticket dollars over the years. The greatest tribute to Prine was all the folks who said they reacted to news of his passing in exactly the same way. We all felt like one of our best friends had died.

First saw John Prine in the seventies at McCabes, a guitar store on Pico. A small venue with extremely limited seating. A great show by a true artist.

John Prine

Couldn't agree more. "You may see me tonight with an illegal smile.....". Angel from Montgomery is one of the singular songs of our age.....how he could nail the inner world of an old woman in a stale marriage in those few words, is just a wonder. 66 coupe

John Prine ... for the guitar player in all of us!

His music is still with us thankfully, and now seems like an appropriate time for him to have his own thread here.

The following interview is a good introduction to the man and how he got started IMO:

John has been mentioned all over the place on AirForums, including the OTRA I and II, Who Likes Guitar Music, and Guy Clark threads:

Rest in Peace.

Great stories about writing the songs for the last album, and the two men seem very comfortable and at ease . . . nice!

Remembrances from Fionna and other artists:

Good story about finally getting a Porsche 911!

Rest in Peace.

A variety of other covers are on the right of the YouTube page.

A heads up that this PBS special will not be available for viewing after 5/1/21:

https://www.pbs.org/video/the-best-o...-prine-qv4uby/

Forty years of performances on Austin City Limits . . . all in one hour . . . great intro by Jason Isbell.

"Priceless!"

"I Remember Everything"

The last song John recorded, for which he was recently awarded a Grammy.

"Sometimes a little tenderness was the best that I could do."

Amen.
