I moved away from cash as much as possible many years ago. After a stint as the driver of the city's Paddy Wagon, I discovered cash can be quite yucky! These drunks, usually going commando, had pissed and crapped themselves. Their wadded up cash and coins were stuffed in their pants pockets getting coated with these bodily excrements, and were soon to be spread to the community as this cash circulated.

The increase in the drugged out homeless population hasn't improved things.

I can't fully go cashless, but I try to limit my exposure as much as possible.

Rights, privileges, fairness and discrimination.

It's a thorny issue courts are challenged to balance and sort out, so I doubt if we will reach consensus on an internet forum

I'm a business owner, nobody tells me how to run it! (sure they do, see FTC, IRS, OSHA, et.al. ad infinitum)

I'm a customer, same as next guy, I demand to be treated fairly! (but there are dress codes, rights of association, reserved rights regarding property, alcohol and weapons-on-premisses regulations, etc. and so on)

Some business owners even today still resent being told they have to serve people with a different skin complexion. Some customers demand to enter privately-owned stores serving the public while wielding assault rifles. There are lots bigger fish waiting to be fried besides whether US legal tender is accepted.

The funny thing about the law, the logic in court just might confuse. A business may not be required by law to accept cash, but refuse to accept US money for a US debt and the debt may not be pursuable in court for failure to pay as USA money is "legal tender for all debts, public and private." Offer to pay, then point out the cash legitimacy, and thank them for the gift. Be prepared to also point this out to the policeman they call.

Iíve always thought that a credit or debit card takes some of the sense of reality out of appreciating just what youíre spending as opposed to spending it in actual cash money. Peeling off hundred dollar bills is much more visceral to me than signing a chit. Itís the reason they give you chips to play with in a casino, it ainít real money, itís just a game.

Now donít get me started on how ďrealĒ fiat currency is to begin with...

Cheers,
John

If I pay cash at a restaurant and tip waiters in cash, I don't often ask whether or not if they paid their taxes. Many here paid cash for our Airstreams and I don't care if the seller didn't report it as income.

You like to pay full price or more, good for you.
