I am very sad to report during my trip....

Let me tell more.. I have a theory that AS owners are 1 in 100 and SOB owners are 100 of 1.

So with that in mind, last week we drove from NC to Sebastian FL for vacation. On the way down and back I decided it might be fun to count RV's.. i know lame right.. that's what my wife said as well..

I start counting from exit 312 on I-40 to I-95 to Florida exit 155.. quite a ways to keep up with rv's. Now there are section in SC mainly that the N and S bound lane are far apart and lots of trees block the view.

on the way down i counted 125 RV's,, motor homes, travel trailers, 5th wheels etc.. i did not separate they by subclass..

on the way back up from Florida I actually kept track, or should i say my wife kept track of how may were MH, TT and 5th wheel .

on the way up we counted as follows,, 52 TT, 108 MH,, 8 pop ups, 28 5th wheel= 196 total

Of the 125 heading North, and 196 going South we only saw ONE airstream.. it was a small bambi looking unit i almost missed.. it was heading south on I-95 some where in GA.

so I guess my theory was somewhat correct so actually AS owners are 1 in 200, a rare breed indeed..

Depends on where you camp. The first two nights we camped last weekend, Airstreams were the norm. The 3rd night we were the only one. The trip itself, well, we didn't see any Airstreams. To be fair, the campground the first 2 nights was an Airstream owners campground.

I was hoping to see a convoy of airstream heading to some where and stare in marvel at the wondrous sight.

guess i will have to stop by a airstream only? park..

I have missed attending several rallies in NC due to scheduling conflicts but hope to attend one soon.. While i do not currently have a AS my chev impala is silver in color and has some nice chrome on it so it might blend right in.

I travel from Nj to Chicago area and beyond about
8 times a Summer. I play the rv game everytime. I only count what I see moving on the road( it would be like shooting fish in a bowl in IN. ) my numbers can be as high as 6 or 7 hundred on a trip. You r right very few AS, mostly tt and 5th wheel, and of the tt most are under 24'long, little families just starting out., I tape a piece of paper to my steering wheel to keep track.

During my travels in the Gulf Coast states, the RVs I see the most of are Class A (only half of which have toads), followed very closely by 5th wheel. Travel trailers are about tied for a distant third with Class Cs.

Sprinter-based Class Bs like mine can be counted on one hand in the past year and a half.

I can often go an entire trip without ever seeing another Airstream at all, either on the road or in the campground.

Last Saturday we travelled with our AS from Buffalo NY to near Cooperstown on the I 90 and saw three Airstreams (and had a wave from all of them). On Monday we travelled to Albany on US20 then to Middleboro MA on the I 90 and a few other interstates and didn't see a single Airstream. I guess that's the difference between weekends and weekdays. We're at the KOA in Middleboro and are the only AS on site.

Whilst I didn't count the RVs, from casual observation I reckon that Motorhomes, Class A mostly, are the most common in this part of the world and about half of them have a toad. Bears out the OP's observations, really.

Acadia National Park seems to attract Airstreams like moths to light. Last time we were there, there was a 19' in the adjacent site, a 60s Flying Cloud, a five-cylinder Interstate, and a Sprinter Westfalia.

You apparently missed us then, as we were leaving Flagler Beach and heading south on 95. I find the same thing, though, as we hardly ever see other AS on the road. I drove from Virginia to Tampa once and didn't see a single AS on the road.

....I did a 4 week trip to the Southwest in April, and just did 2 weeks in Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine (I did not go to Acadia). I saw 18 Airstreams in the 4 week trip, mostly in campgrounds. I saw ZERO Airstreams on the trip through the Northeast, but my trailer most assuredly drew attention once I'd pulled in and set-up.

not on porpoise... there are a bunch of areas where the NB and SB lanes are real far apart and full of dense vegetation so you are not able to see the other side for long stretches.

Sorry we missed you.. hope you had a good one.

I do the same. Just got back last week, towed about 2000 miles, and saw two airstreams. Always expect to see more on the long trips, but no such luck.

Middleboro KOA, all of five minutes from home. Enjoy the area.

I 10 West

We travel from Beaumont to Las Cruces NM 2 or 3 times each year on I10. It is rare that we see more than 3 AS and two of them are usually between Houston and San Antonio. We normally will stop over night at Longhorn camp ground in Keerville and there may be 1 or 2 there. The round trip is about 2000 mi.

It's kind of nice being in the minority and in an eye catching AS.

Middleboro was good (liked Hannaford's a lot) but the traffic in New England in general was horrible, and that's coming from a Brit who has spent more than a few hours creeping along the congested roads of the UK. Anyway, traffic apart, we enjoyed our week there.

Airstreams

Camped with 18 Airstreams this past weekend in NY near Albany. Had wonderful weather and a great time. Saw 6 or 7 Airstreams traveling in the opposite direction on our roundtrip.
Will be with approx. 10 trailers weekend after Labor Day in Plymouth, MA. Sandy Pond Campground.

Last week we left Wednesday for the annual Hotter-n-Hell 100 bike race, 65 miles away. We saw 2, a Bambi and a newer model. The HH 100 is a big event, over 14,000 participants and likely 6000 family members if not more so there are over 20,000 people that come to a city of 110,000. That's a lot of tourism for an event. We were advised (first year taking our AS) to get there no later than Thursday morning if we wanted power and water hookup, since there are usually about 800-1000 TT's, Motorhomes. There was only 1 other AS, an older maybe 60's model. Was ok with us, since we were the novelty. Several people came by. I backed in our neighbors 5th wheel behemoth. Nice couple from OKC. He sent her ahead with the trailer (she'd never driven with it) and couldn't get the backing up part... Part of the mountain bike trail went thru our campground since we were by the river (where there was shady camp sites) 3 people had low tires or flats and we were the only people who offered our bike tire pump. One group came in 3 sob's. One needed a water hose, another an extension cord for power. We had extra so we shared. I will say that the AS owners we meet are always nice and friendly. The others, not so much percentage wise...

But one of the greatest joys of being so very unique is the wonderful opportunity to share our beauties with all the curious onlookers! Took my 63 Overlander on her maiden voyage to Green Lake Campground in Green Lake, Wisconsin and was, of course, the only AS. Had SO many people stopping by to say Hi and take a peek. All positive comments and maybe just a "teeny" bit of envy! Love being "one-of-a-kind"!!!!

I find this thread so interesting. My wife and never considered ourselves "RV People" but we love Acadia National Park having been there more than 8-9 times in the last 20 years. 2 years ago we bought a Pleasure Way Sprinter RV and loved it. We're retiring next year and plan to go fulltime. We seriously thought of buying a small Airstream to pull behind the Sprinter but ended up buying a Flying Cloud 30. Great minds must think alike.
