Hurricane Katrina Airstreams
Hello All,
I just was wondering as I drove by a huge FEMA Farm today what happened to all the Airstreams in the path of Hurricane Katrina. For those that do not know what a FEMA Farm is - it's a very large open piece of land planted with thousands of SOB's trucked in from up north somewhere. Not a good place to live, they are spaced about 5 feet apart. Just enough room to open the door. Not a trailer park you want to camp in.
Anyway, huge natural disaster like this had to take a toll on many vintage trailers that their owners did not evacuate with. How do I find one and who would know where these are? I hate to think that these are being distroyed without a chance to salvage some things.

Yep, that hurts. I had seen that one as I searched eBay today. The loss is amazing when you consider what I see every day on my drive around the coast. Friday, as I was waiting to merge onto I-59 from work - I had to wait for the line of trucks with loads of crushed cars to go by. There were 22 of them, I counted, 12 crushed cars per truck. I guess thats what planted the seed for this thread, and today the FEMA farm got me thinking of trailers too.
They have to be out there somewhere.

A friend of mine called me from New Orleans night before last (partying/half drunk) and said the city is still a mess. He called a few minutes ago and commented about the white FEMA trailers being parked on slabs where businesses used to stand and in parking lots. He also mentioned all kinds of torn up/muddy cars under bridges or just pushed off the road. What a mess.

Here is one I found in Waveland, MS. Looked like it was in the process of being restored, had some polishing done. Looked like a really nice unit before it got damaged.

Ouch!
Looks like that thing got the **** kicked out of it. The airstream behind it in the first shot looks ok.

That's sad! As for the one on ebay, well, I don't think the herricane is completely to blame for it's condition. Looks like it was a mess before the hurricane hit. I don't think most people would want to tackle restoring a trailer damaged by hurricanes or serious flood. I've seen pictures of people's homes that spent weeks flooded with sewage, and it's not an easy fixer upper.
The devastation is horrible down there from the bits and pieces I've heard. I'm ashamed that the way our media works is they choose what's big news, so once it lost their interest, they quit reporting on it even though there is still a lot of recovery to do. Does anyone know where's a good place to get news about what's really going on down there?

Hurricane Katrina Airstreams
Boy ! it sure makes me sad to see an Airstream in that condition.
Seems like there should be a burial or something. So sad.

PICK,
Where was that one in Waveland? I would like to go down and talk with the owner.
Yes, it's sad and the news does no justice to the description of the damage. New Orleans gets all the news and the Mississippi Gulf Coast just gets a passing mention. I have lived here most of my life and went through Camile in 1969. Nothing compares to Katrina. People on the Gulf Coast are a little more self motivated to help each other than the NO people. Hate to have to say that but it's true.

Ok, found an early 70's Sovereign, flooded and spray painted with a FEMA number for hauling away. The owner of the trailer park where it was located would not let me near it. FEMA is having auctions in Biloxi, MS to sell off all the damaged cars and trailers. Thought I would go by and look this weekend. The two that PICK pictured above were hauled off earlier. Sad, looks like most of these are going to scrap. I just didn't get on the ball with this early enough. FEMA got the SOVEREIGN for $850.00. Flooded and wet but all hardware and windows, and lights and STUFF are useable. Oh well, next time.

I've got one!
1966 Trade Wind Airstream. We were redoing the floor. Had carefully removed all of the original insides and placed the items in storage. They survived. High and Dry! The outside shell did not! A tree fell on it. Everything is for sale. What do you need? Original, working and in good condition. From the Dometic Fridge to the bunk beds even some of the glass corning windows survived.

I need a window, but it would depend on the price. It's the rear streetside window, medium sized window. Also shipping is risky on those windows. Might not be worth it to worry about the insurance stuff for you or for me...but let me know if you are interested in offering it to me and for what price. The ones at Vintage Trailer Supply that I need are going for $250.00 and that's my only other option.

Sleeping quarters Biloxi, Ms
the wife & I spent 5 weeks there in Oct & Nov as volunteers. I was very depressed when leaving. Those who live there have a difficult time ahead. Utter destruction . New Orleans gets the hype, but Mississippi was really worst. Volunteers are needed & will be for years to come.
Best,

Clancy Boy,
Be careful with the flooded A/S's and parts, microbials from the flooded water (Black Water) can and will cause problems. Some parts/supplies are not worth the risk, don't think bleach will clean this stuff.
The Ms. Coast was devastated with such a major storm.
New Orleans was spared the damage from the NE quadrant of the eye since that went to the gulf coast although the flood water from the levee failure has severely damaged the infrastructure. Many may not know that only about 25% of the population has returned to New Orleans with about 3000 unaccounted for about 6 months after the strom.
FEMA trailers are not even allowed in many parts of New Orleans with the Ninth ward and the East still empty with no utilities or street lights in most places.

MARKEXC500,
I understand your concern but Nikki has stated she is up in Popularville which I doubt was flooded. The rest of the AS I have been looking at were on the MS coast and far from the filth of New Orleans flood waters. Most of what I need are glass and metal so I believe I can safely clean these items.
I have seen 3 more AS's being "towed" towards Biloxi on I10 yesterday. They seem to be grouped and are not mixed with the other junk when I see them. I wonder if there is a buyer specifically for these. They were in sad shape with one on a flatbed. These were also spray painted with the FEMA ID numbers and I believe are headed to the scrap yards. Too many parts for vintage trailers are being destroyed. The whole units may be a waste but there are many useable parts that can be salvaged.

Mike,
I also am interested in parts for my Excella. Please let me know or post any local finds that are available if you don't need them. Thanks.
Just a friendly word of caution, I agree that you could be fine with non flooded parts and flooded exterior parts if properly cleaned with an antimicrobial although any (Black Water) Catagory 3 (rising) Flood is Filth and contaminated if it's on the MS Coast or in New Orleans does not make a difference.
