How did your family and friends react?

It has been much fun and very enlightening to hear--and see!--reactions to this addition to our lives. Everything from: (Kid #1) "Does this mean you won't be paying for grad school?" To: (Kid #2) "Oh you've got to join us on (fill in the blank...) abalone diving camp out, surfing safari, ski trip, trip to Baja etc. etc. (with full larder and empty black tank of course.) To: (father) "This is the greatest thing you are ever going to do in your lives!" To: (friend) Ohmigod we've got to get one of these it's so beautiful. And: (direct quote-sister)"I'm horrified at how much I love this whole condo-on-wheels thing!" Believe me, if it hadn't been an Airstream, none of those words would have ever been uttered. Who knew? Yet another unexpected source of entertainment.

Congrats

Janet,

Congrats again. The AS in the driveway IS an instant conversation. Heck, it is everything I can do to pull away from the gas pump or the check in stand at the RV park. People just love AS and love to take a peek inside.

Has Telford and Julie see it yet?

Hi Janet

It was funny, our friends knew for years that we'd been looking and when we got the one we wanted they were very happy for us. Several have indicated a desire to also own one, but like us it has to be very vintage to fit our hotrod themes, and in reasonable shape, so they are few and far between.

Family were happy but did make comments about the fact that we were not likely to camp with them anymore and we told them that's true unless they stepped to the plate as well which they haven't, but we still camp with them .

The big thing is when we are out using it. The 51 towed behind the 57 wagon really gets a lot of attention. I've mentioned this in other threads but the one thing that always surprises me is the younger people who ask if I bought the trailer and car new. Oh well, I know I am looking a bit tattered for my age but ........ .

Most people do comment that they've always wanted one and intend to get one some day. And most are surprised that you can still buy brand new ones thinking they went out of production years ago. Does this mean Thor's advertising needs to be rethought?

Oh look it's one of those....

I wish they still made them.... (actually had to pull out the registration to prove they were still making them.

A widower friend with a $400K moho.... "So why do I always want to come over HERE to yours...?"
  1. mine isn't pretentious (his could double as a whorehouse on wheels)
  2. there is something homey about curved walls
  3. I cook, he can't boil water
Wow... look inside! Wow. (The bare aluminum, lack of plaid, and minimalist modern interior looks so clean even when it's messy.)

Oh... you don't look like a millionaire

Family: Puzzled, but supportive.

Friends:
Husbands - Wildly enthused. "I want one of these!"
Wives - Puzzled, but pleasant (I think the wet bath freaked 'em out a little)

Parents thought I was nuts.

Brothers got a laugh (until they camped with me).

Friends all laughed.

Wife was on board with the Bambi, thought I was nuts to upgrade to the Safari.

But I'd do it again.

Friends and family are used to us being a bit different. Old house, old cars, unusual occupations, and now a 20 year old motorhome. Friends who have moho's that cost 5 times as much or more don't quite get it until they come inside. Of course they are seeing the after, not the before (see pix). Family all love it.

Brother-in-law.."Are you kidding? I can't afford one of those"( He makes 4 times what I do)
Mother..."Well, our Aljo was good enough for us".

I get "Nice Trailer".
My old neighbors did not get a chance to say anything. It was in my driveway and I was living in it for my last four days in Virginia.
My youngest sister "That's Great!"
My other sister "Where can I get one of those?"
My mom "When are you building your house in Montana so I can come visit?" My responce. "I am not. I am building a Hangar?
My Dad "You be careful".
General responce from my Friends "Are you nuts?" to "I am jealous."
I have never been normal.

Mother's reaction before I purchased, "What do you want one of those things for! You need to be thinking about saving your money for retirement!"

Mom's reaction now, "WE need to figure a way to keep it polished, the shine gives it even more appeal . . . your Daddy would have been proud!. Now when's the next rally?"

Friends at work, "Cool, so can we call you 'Classy Trailer Trash?'"

Camping with friends owning huge Class A SOB Moho's, "How come no one cares about seeing the inside of MY RV?"

My favorite reaction came from the guys at the tire store when we stopped by for tires "so, you're going to be camping with the grey-hairs now?"

Most people thought we were nuts because they said we are way too young to buy an RV! However we must have passed some age threshold, because recently when we've told friends and family we have an Airstream the reaction has been "You have one of those, tell me more, I'd like to get one someday.!"

Neighbor's reaction:
"So, this means more time away using the Airstream... less time at home cooking BBQ for your neighbors? This is not a good thing".

Sometimes life just isn't fair.

We brought our Safari home at the same time that our neighbors were on vacation in Yellowstone. They came back and saw our Airstream, and said, "We saw all those big white trailers in Yellowstone, and they all look the same. We talked about how cool it would be to get an old Airstream or other vintage trailer. Then we come home and see that in your driveway!"

My parents were excited, as they knew we'd been looking for some time (that switched to slightly puzzled when we bought the second one).

The sister-in-law doesn't see what's so great about an old trailer, as her Jayco is only a couple of years old and much bigger. She is also irritated when our Airstream gets more attention in the campground.

Our kids think we have "sold out." We camped for years as a family in a Starcraft tent trailer, and it is absolutely FULL of memories. Our kids (one married and the other in college) have no attachment to the Airstream... and they think it is just a bit too "comfortable" for real camping. To be honest, I understand their point of view, and our tent trailer still sits safely in our garage... waiting for one of our kids to claim it, which is sure to happen.

That's exactly why we bought an Airstream and not an SOB!

When we bought Lucy, our four sons and other friends and family all told us that they could not believe that "WE" were going camping. We are not what you would think of as the camping type. But every one of them just loves Lucy. Our third son's comment was, "I'd like to have one those".
