I added my WBCCI number to the trailer to make it unique. Hopefully it will make it to Jackson Center, OH.

It's been a couple of years and my travel bug was MIA for a few months, but it was spotted today. It has moved 2,337 miles from it's last location in Southern California and is now located in Pottsgrove, PA.

It has overshot it's intended destination of Jackson Center, but it is within 450 miles of it's target.

I just signed up for a geocaching account. I think it will be a good camping and dog-walking activity.

Thanks for reviving this thread!
We started caching in October. We're addicted.

GPS advice

I have an iPad 2 with 3G, so I might use that. However, a handheld GPS would be easier to manage. The eXplorist GC is made exclusively for geocaching. Is that too limiting? Should I look for a more general purpose GPS? I can get the eXplorist 310 here at Cabela's. There is only a $30 difference between the two, but I'll have to get the GC online. I like the shape of the eXplorist series devices.

Have a smartphone? We geocache with our smartphones... haven't tried the iPad for geocaching.

I love geocaching!!! Unfortunately, urban caching is difficult. The ones around my house always seem to be at playgrounds and near schools, and I always feel like a creep (20's white male wandering through bushes by himself near playgrounds).

I try to do as many as I can on backpacking/camping trips. I have found that pulling up the geocaching map of a destination is a good way to find out-of-the-ordinary hiking destinations that you wouldn't have otherwise known about. I've found some amazing hidden cabins in the forest and half-buried cars in the desert that way.

No. No smartphone, so I want to look at getting a GPS. I have seen YouTube videos of people using iPads, but the online reviews of the apps aren't great. It's worth a try, though. Cheaper than a GPS.

.
That's what I was wondering too! The ones in my neighbourhood are all at schools or parks. I guess I can pretend I'm picking up my dog's "packages"!

About the iPad App, I think the main problem with it is that it's small. (Still designed for a smartphone... and not scaled for the iPad yet.) You should try it before plunking down all that cash for a GPS.

I put the free iPhone app on my iPad and it worked. I can increase the size so that it almost fills the iPad screen; however, it stays only in the "portrait" orientation, and won't flip to the "landscape" position on my screen. The accuracy seems ok. The one trouble is that it's hard to look inconspicuous when you are carrying such a large device. I'm also afraid of dropping it. Pretty fun to try, though!
