Well QT dropped to $2.83 yesterday. We are seeing a wide spread of prices in the STL meto area in the past week. Some stations over $3.00. Not sure why the spread. Unusual since they've been in lock step for many years now.

Reading how much 2air’ loves his F-250 Power Stroke Diesel…
But after seeing diesel fuel costs more than premium…
Maybe I should choose the 5.4 L V8…
What would you do?

Bill,
The diesel will pull more weight at a better mileage rate than a equivalent gas engine. Also a diesel has a "potentially" longer life span.

CA diesel

silvergate,

The price of diesel in CA is different than in most states. Besides the fact that fuel is more expensive in CA than most, it is also one of the handfull of states where diesel can be higher than premium. If you are going to travel out of state, the price differential for diesel is a non issue, in fact, it can be lower than regular in some areas. This was my observation during a cross counrty trip in May.

In the land of cheese; reg. 3.24 gal Diesel 3.14 gal.
After traveling around the state the price seems solid at every station from the Dells, to Madison.

Oh, but a few ststions will gladly trade fuel for pelts

hey artlink!

good to read from ya...pelts....i'm dying here!

silvergate...i still love the psd f-250, like most of the users here.

don't want to drift this thread much...

prices, prices and more prices...with a bit of commentary....

but you have a 23 safari? lots of tow options...

why not start a thread on the issue and watch the help roll in....

on the f-250 side the v10 has same hp as the psd...just less torque.

and poorer milage. but it is a very strong gas platform. any diesel should go more miles...
but not everyone is thinking in 200k terms...

with the new ultra low sulfur diesel fuel about to happen, my guess is we will see lots of price flux....for a year or 2. this is going to be a confusing time for sludge runners...

but biod is coming, veggie is coming. expect to see many more diesel cars and trucks in production....a diesel audi won the lemans and sebring races this year!!! cool.

so this is my first diesel...

and i'm still happy to have it. 25k miles towing in 15months...

would buy another without doubt...

cheers

i'm off to trap some beavers and do some skinnin'...and find a lower price...

I got to drive this V10 for a week! Pounded it all week, no smoke whatsoever.

Go Diesel or go home.

hi westfalia....

well you read my mind!

actually my first draft of the post above include this v10....

man is it cool....
you know the us government essentially sent these back to germany...
and required vag to recertify 'em....as i understand.
see the emissions technology was so new and so different and so CLEAN, that the government didn't believe it worked....
they wanted more data...

that is why after the first batch,
it has taken forever to get these diesels models back in dealer inventory...

and this would be a fine tv for the trailer in question...but pricey....

great picture too!

cheers

I saw a Toureg W-10 diesel on Ebay for $89K. Yikes, that's a lot of dough.

There should be no confusion after ULSD comes out, at all. Because that's the only thing that will be available. A 1% drop in mpg will be experienced by all, due to the lower BTU content of the fuel. Lubricity is a concern with this new fuel, although the producers say it will pass "their lubricity test."

I am currently running a small percentage of Biodiesel in my Duramax, between 5-30%. I've got my John Deere 820 up to about 80% now. Neighbors all seem to leave for McDonalds every time we start mowing the lawn. The engine runs noticably quieter now.

Wow, $89k for the Toureg vs $35k for an F-250. The saved money would keep me in fuel for a long time, even at current prices.

Watched diesel go from $3.39 to $3.69 in the space of 2 HOURS at a Shell station in Spokane the other day!!! I guess they got the call to up the price. I paid $2.22 the same day to fill up the Duramax van...go figure.

I keep wondering why by backside hurts........

cheers, Jeff

yea right.

i'm all for ulsd, would have liked it 5 years ago...

the date may be set...but even that is a soft figure.

gradual phase in? what to do to the tanks and lines? sulfur may fluctuate during this time? so may the other lubricity additives, which refinery is gonna send fuel where? and so on...

pretending this is a simply a 'turn the switch' thing...is simplistic.

the confusions referred to in my post...apply to someone considering buying a diesel...were related to the HUMAN making buying decisions...

get one?
old or new?
old technology or new?
where can i go now with it?
can't go to mexico with ultra low new diesel yet...

will i need lubricaton additives...and is that for an old or new diesel?

warranty issues if i add a little biod..what percentage...
what if i get some 300ppm diesel by mistake?
how much before i'm screwed..
can i blend a little old fuel with new...till by home tank is empty?

i realize there are petrol websites with faqs but i've been reading them...and the answers sometimes change for a given question!!!

how will maintenance costs change? what about particulate filters...

does the change apply to all diesels? every single one?

that is just a short list of the confusing issues intelligent folks may ponder.

prices are likely to be wildly fluctuating on the diesel side as well and until this is all worked out....1-2 years.

so the confused includes "should i buy a diesel with these crazy prices?"

i would buy again now no question...

but my statement that 'a confusing time' is coming...stands.

cheers

The manual of my 2006 Durmax states they do allow BioD up to 20% IIRC. The problem so far is not would I burn it, but where can I get it as I'd have to drive almost an hour to get to a station that sells BioD. Oh, and they happen to make it there too, in large volume. It seems that farmers are buying it in bulk, but no one is buying it for the fuel stations. While it was interesting that Pres. Bush visited this refinery just last year, that BioD is not getting much press, though I have to say, neither is ULSD.

And to stick with the thread - Diesal was $2.89 ish yesterday, while regular gas was $2.78.

2air’ – Thanks for illustrating why it’s a confusing time to buy a new tow vehicle…
especially for a newbie…

I took your advice and started a new thread "Gas vs. Diesel" in Towing section:
http://www.airforums.com/forum...rld-25248.html

Glad you still love your PSD F-250!

Diesel is around $3.05 here. Regular varies $2.99 to $3.16 at the rip off freeway stations.

I am paying $3.25 for biodiesel locally. I blend with dino diesel. Our is made in Lakeland, Florida, by a subsidy of World Energy.

Propane is running around $3-$4.10 for home delivery and RV fillups. 30# tanks $20-23. I still get mine at FlyingJ for under $2.

If you think we are concerned about fuel prices, I found this site while roaming around the Hybrid crowd:

Paid $2.69 for ethanol in Iowa yesterday. I can't get over how sad it is that I just bragged about $2.69!!!

Most of the week regular unleaded has been $ 3.09 at the Chevron down the street. Seems like a decent price when compared to other states, as California pricing is usually through the roof.
