For whatever help it may provide: from an earlier post on another topic, from stuff I learned in Boy Scouts:
If it is a flag of the United States of America, aka "Old Glory" then you normally mount it so the star field is nearest the mast/pole, on the top side.
If you mount it so the star field is nearest the mast/pole but on the bottom side i.e. upside down, that is a sign of distress and that you need help.
If you mount it so the star field is opposite the mast/pole, that is also a sign that you need help, but of a different kind.
