Dustin's Crib
During my 2 week holiday shutdown, I built crib number 5 for grandchild number 5. All 5 cribs are the same basic design, but each one is different and therefore unique. Three coats of salad bowl finish over unstained white oak. Dustin is due to arrive early February.

That is something! Do you have pictures of the others? Are they all to same household, or different kids' babies? I"t's a unique twist on the old silver cup & spoon set. Nice work.

Thanks for the kind words! They are a labor of love, but really not that hard to build anymore. The first one took awhile though!
I have a few pictures of the other cribs. 4 of the 5 were for grandchildren, and 1 was for my daughter-in-law's sister who is just like another daughter-in-law. Our second grandchild had a crib supplied by the other grandparents, so son #2 wanted a high chair instead. I'll need to dig that out of storage at some point so Dustin can use it, and I can take pictures of it then. I finally got into the digital camera age with grandchild #3.
The order I built them: Katie, Alyssa, Erik, Rinda, and Dustin. Katie's & Alyssa's are both hard maple. I added some cherry accents to Erik's, and Rinda's is all cherry. All have the same clear Salad Bowl finish which drys non-toxic, so teething on them isn't an issue.

He's Here!!!!
Dustin Andrew Wimmer was born Feb 1, 2010, at 8:09 am. 20 inches long and 8.2 pounds. Here he is at home in the crib I made, with mom (my baby Eileen), and meeting one of the cats (Trouble).

Congratulations, he is a beautiful baby. The cribs are wonderful and I know each minute you worked on them you thought of the new baby coming. What is a "salad bowl" finish? I occcasionally rescue old things and that sounds like something that would be good to use.

"Salad Bowl Finish" is a non-toxic (when dry) clear finish that is food safe. It's also sold as "Toymaker's Finish" and is safe for kids toys and cribs. Safe for kids to chew on. Toymakers Finish is sold by the pint, and Salad Bowl Finish is sold by the quart at Rockler: http://www.rockler.com/CategoryView.cfm?Cat_ID=96
Note the prices of both before you order one. They are really the same thing.

Those are awsome cribs and awsome work I must say. They are very lucky children. There is nothing more heart warming than to build something for a child.I harvested a cherry tree on my brothers farm in 2004 air dried and built this desk for my eight year old daughter. Even at 8 she treasures it. Robert

Congratulations,
How wonderful that you've been able to build one for each grandchild. They will surely treasure them for years to come.
My father wasn't really a woodworker but the wanted to be, and he did build one cradle 27 years ago for a neice. Since then it's been used for two other grandchildren, and is currently being used on a fifth great-grandchild. All of the kids would have love one to pass down .

Aww - what a cutie! I love the little mittens he's got.
My father-in-law built a beautiful wooden cradle for my kids - we weren't able to use it for a very long time, but it's a labour of love that's going to be passed down to future generations.
Good for you and congrats!
