Have been to Nunnally House, near the hospital in Brunswick, GA......as beautiful as a very nice hotel, with 40 rooms.
A wing of 15 is set aside for cancer patients, 8 for families of patients in critical care, the remainder for residents and interns who come and go thru the year. All the rooms can be used however they are needed, the wing for cancer patients receiving chemotherapy is just separate.
Absolutely lovely, and made possible thru a gift from one person and his family. A beautiful, paved, outdoor patio, with tables, chairs and sunbrellas, as well as the expanded gardens and landscaping, are courtesy of another, single donor. Any who want to read more and/or see photos can find this online.
This photo is of the gardens, where you can see walkways laid out but not yet completed. Doug's memorial bench will go somewhere behind that loop, under those enormous live oaks.
A lovely spot. He would be pleased.
I also visited for a bit with Dr. Wright Culpepper, an oak of another sort. What a kind, good, and dear man.
It was difficult being back there, but now we have a visual of where the bench will be. I wanted that.
Maggie

I know it was hard for you to be there, Maggie. You have been on my mind quite a bit and I have been sending up prayers for strength for you.
The bench will look perfect under those beautiful oaks. A wonderful place for people to sit in contemplation.

Thank you, Page.
The hedges surrounding this in-the-works area are going to be allowed to grow tall to provide some seclusion and privacy, I was told, and linked by a paved path to the beautiful patio already in place. It will be a lovely, peaceful spot for a bench.
The original house, where we stayed, was a simple, older home near the hospital, which was purchased with funds leftover from those raised for a cancer patient who did not survive.
Its primary function was to house chemo patients during the week, many of whom were impoverished, lived some distance from the hospital, and were foregoing chemotherapy because they couldn't afford gas costs to and from the hospital. Sheltering family of critical care patients there could only be done if one of the four bedrooms were free.
Nunnally House can now handle everything, and is just a block from the hospital.
I had a larger, more expansive and inclusive photo, but had to cut it down to get it to post right side up.

This thread is 2 months old and I'm just now finding it. Been to busy with tax season to read forums much. That looks like lovely area to take a break and sit awhile. I think Doug would love it. The stranded travelers fund is perfect. Doug was so kind and sweet I can just see him giving gas or food money to folks in need.

Given that the primary purpose of Nunnally House is to care for people in personal or family medical crisis, I hope the bench will be oft-used and its presence provide much comfort.
The walkway you can see laid out in the last photo is in the shape of a cancer ribbon.
The bench should be arriving in the next week or two, and Faithworks promises a photo.

The bench is in.
It is being assembled, and I am told I will have a photo at least by tomorrow.
Perfect timing.

Got a photo just a bit ago.
They have temporarily placed the bench in the courtyard of Nunnally House, while the garden area is completed.
They tell me it is "very sturdy and of excellent quality".
I think it looks quite nice.

Just short of one year, we've come full circle....and a bench in place.

It is a beautiful bench, Maggie. When it is in its final spot, it will be a wonderful place for contemplation.

Very nice, I especially like the plaque and inscription, as we all "are travelers passing through".
