D'oh. New Credit & Debit cards

Every once in a while I get royally ticked off, but I generally try kindness, reason and finally sarcasm before going into lock and load mode. This morning I saved myself a big red face by using that strategy.

I "lost" my debit card in the center console of my truck. Did that once before and after ripping out the whole thing never found the card.. until one day it fell out on the floor. This time, to avoid the 4 hour job, I just called my bank and ordered a new one. I picked it up from mailbox last night.

So after midnight I called the bank to activate it, pressed the correct option, looked at the card.... and NO NUMBER ON THE EFFEN CARD. And no human interface available til 9 AM this morning. I looked over the card and the paperwork, uttered a rude word or six, and waited for 9AM.

The embossed numbers have finally been dropped. The card number, expiration date and verification code are now all just printed on the back... in smaller print than formerly... and for my bank, in dark gray ink on a light gray background. I called this morning and asked what to do. She said "flip the card over, half way down on the left." D'oh. Glad I was nice.

It has been 20-25 years since the old paper charge slips were used, so embossing has actually been obsolete for a long time. Anyway the banker I spoke to said she was getting many, many calls from people with renewal cards, and she wishes they would put a red ink sticker on the front announcing the new format.

Hope this saves one or two members from that WTH moment.

Thanks for that, Paula.

They send paper with these new cards, seems a no brainer that such a change would warrant a red, large-type alert to the modification...or some such similar notification.

A co-worker just showed me his new Apple Pay card. It is made of titanium and has nothing but a chip on it. Interesting times. I use a credit card but I still like cash in hand.

Yep...M/S sent the new metal management card when they first came out a year or so ago. At that time not many venders had the equipment to read them...spent a lot of time on the phone, and a few cross words...em·bare·ass·ing much?😖
All's well now though...👍

I've had those non-embossed cards a couple years. It took me a while to notice the printed account number on the back.
I got a notice from my bank/credit card company this week that they are converting to "tap and pay" cards, to look for it in the mail soon. I'm not sure what that is?

I got the same notice this week for a credit card. My Costco card is a Tap and Go card as well. Instead of swiping or chipping your card, you get your card in close proximity of the card reader and your card information is read. Card readers that work with these cards have this symbol on them:

Tap and pay cards have an RF id chip in them. You just get them close to the Front of card reader to do a transaction. They also have the chip contacts on them and are typically not embossed.

It’s a good idea to keep those cards in a shielded case when not in use so shady types can’t read them from a distance.

And they call it 'progress'! I too near exclusively use a credit card to get the rewards - always paying off the card each month. I have to remind myself to keep some cash.

I am seriously considering getting a "deadbeat" prepaid credit card, and using it for all my bill paying and shopping. Devito cards are too open and credit cards keep "rewarding" me with higher limits.

10yrs with no CC's...👍

.......One bank debit/ck'ing and one Morgan FM/ck'ing.

No wireless reading...as noted above, they may need protection.
I buckled down after retirement. It took some self control, but all CC debt is history.😀

I totally eliminated using my card at gas pumps. Many pumps have flaky card readers, and if the card is misread three times, the bank shuts off the card. That requires a half hour on the phone to the bank.
So, I stock up on gas gift cards. My local grocery (Publix) has cards on sale every three weeks. So I get a couple $50 Shell gift cards for $40 each. Then, I use those in the pumps, already saving 20%. My banking information is not on the card. When it's gone, throw it in the trash. If I can't find a Shell, I walk into the c-store and plop down $40 cash for a pump. Inconvenient? Not nearly as much as being 1000 miles from home and your bank card is locked!
When I do use my bank card, I do it at WalMart and get an additional $100. Never go to a bank's ATM any more. My card never leaves my control.

POI on the metal cards...I tried to use one at our local banks ATM and it couldn't read it and wouldn't return it.
It also couldn't shred it, I went to the teller and got it back.
If it had been plastic...it might have been history. 😂

It happened to me too, except at 6 pm Friday night on a weekend with a holiday Monday.
It's rare for a bank to return a card. Usually they suspect fraud of some kind.
