Couple of nagging questions..

1) Winterizing. If you drain all of the water from the system, why would you fill it up with anti-freeze? What then are you preventing from freezing if there is no water?

2) Vent stacks. No tops on them. Water falls right in. Inside the vent stack there is a rubber seal thing that the pipe fits up into. Where does the water go that falls into the vent stack?

1) The water pump if nothing else. Some people just blow all the water out with compressed air and do not add antifreeze. I did that one winter. Replaced the water pump the next spring as the seals dried out. So, I fill with antifreeze faithfully now.

2) Water falling into the vent stacks will end up in the gray and black water tanks. Not much rain water really gets in that way.

The rubber seal around the vent pipe keeps water out of the wall. According to several people on the forums, the rubber needs to be replaced every few years.

I also understand that even if you blow out the lines, small amounts of water can remain in the faucet valves and possibly cause problems. I blow it out and then pump in antifreeze. I know, it's likely not necessary to blow out the lines if you are using antifreeze, oh well, I'm a guy and I like to do things like that! As to antifreeze to me, it's just cheap insurance.

The water that surrounds the sewer vent pipe, within the vent pipe cover, runs out thru the built in holes, in the bottom side of the cover.

Draining the water, is being "hopeful" that you don't get a freeze up.

Adding antifreeze, provides a "guarantee" that you won't get a freeze up.

Cheapest insurance you could ever invest in.

Like others have said here. You can't be too safe.. I say spend the 10-15 bucks on the pink stuff, and make sure to run it through all your lines and drains. Well worth the cheap investment. In the spring you can reclaim some of it, and re-use it if you wan to save a buck. We winterize houses here all the time, and have to use more for those lines as they are bigger, etc. But still... If you miss blowing a line out, or water settles somewhere and freezes..... Not fun having to fix split lines. I've done it, it's no fun.

Rex which of the nine days of the year do you suggest not checking the vents?

What I was trying to get across. That the rubber casket will leak. They dry up and the pipe will slip down and water will cause damage to your plywood floor. So, get up there and check you sewer pipes! Hope your project is going well Mr. Was....

Rex I can't help but laugh. First a typo shortened the year from 365 days to 356. Now you're talking about the rubber casket that will leak. Who gets buried in a rubber casket anyways. When they drop you in the hole you'd bounce right back out.

National Holidays are probably good days to skip the checking.
