Change...

After 8 years and some 80,000 miles of towing our beloved Bambi International 16 around, we have decided to change things up.
We split our retired time between our trawler, home and our Airstream. We love all of them. I’d say that of the 3 our Airstream is the easiest. It is simple to take care of, it is a great way to travel and it is relatively inexpensive.
Today, we placed a deposit on a Globetrotter 25’ with Colonial Airstream. If you have not seen their new facility...all I can say is WOW!
We purchased our original Bambi from them in 2012 and now we’ve purchased our new one there.
We will take delivery of the GT in December and we hope to do a little traveling early next year in a post COVID or recovering COVID world.
I think I will be trading in my Audi Q7 for a truck. I love the Q7 and it was an awesome Bambi hauler but I am nervous about towing a 25 with it.
I have a lot of fun here on AirForums over the past 8 years and I hope to share more of our experiences going forward.
Now off to study truck offerings for 2020!

Congrats on your new AS (and yes I know its six months away). The 25 GT is a really nice choice. Just curious what color scheme you decided upon? And what options are available on the new GT's?

And, of course, you will need to post pictures.

Best wishes on a new TV. The new trucks are not quite an Audi but they are really nice. Let us know what you decided.

Thank you Bob. We really loved our Bambi but we always knew that someday we’d think about a larger unit. Not too large though! I have always found it interesting that Airstream has no models between 16’ and 25’ with wrap around windows Both front and rear. We love looking out of those windows!

We don’t mind the wait at all! Most of our Airstream traveling is done in the late winter/early spring as we escape the cold New England winters.

As for the Audi, I do love the car. It is the nicest car I have ever owned! I simply can’t make myself comfortable with the idea of subjecting it to the duty of towing such a heavy trailer. It tows our Bambi beautifully but... I guess I am just a bit of a chicken!

As for color, we ended up with Natural Elm/London Grey. It was the last color combination I thought I would like as we drove to Colonial but... we both liked it immediately. It is light and neutral. It feels airy compared to the darker Walnut that I was voting for looking at pictures. Both of us prefer blue/grey tones to brown/beige tones so I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised!

Congrats

As the owner of an SQ5 I understand the trade offs. I should also say we tow with an F350 Platinum. The higher trim trucks have all the luxury of the Audi. The gotcha is payload trade offs. As I’m sure you know this is the limiting number. Good luck finding the right replacement there are a number of great choices.

I really did love that Audi! I purchased it a year ago not believing that we would be upsizing our Airstream for a while...
I owned and operated a shop that serviced and repaired European autos. We are fortunate to now be retired but I lived and breathed cars for many years...
Although I understand the idea that a good handling car that is properly set up makes a great tow vehicle, I couldn’t bring myself to begin modifying the Audi. Audi is pretty adamant that no weight distribution hitches be used and the Listed tongue weight of the new Globetrotter is 10% higher than the Audi’s listed capacity. Nope, with the 25, I decided to return to a truck.
My wife owns an SQ5. If I behave she will let me sit in the passenger seat occasionally...
