Apparently 45 families had orders on the books with hefty deposits paid.

The deposit kills me, why so much?

I see Oliver charges 15% deposit to get a start date on the build. I looked some time ago but they run around $60K I think?
If so you need to give a $9K deposit, what does AS do?

Generally speaking, deposited funds should have gone into an escrow account. Sounds like the company in this case diverted those deposits to operating funds and when the company folded, the money was gone.
