Battery Musings
We were intrigued by electric cars, so we bought a first generation Nissan Leaf. It was a 2011 so it had the 24 kWh battery. I remember telling my boss about the car and comparing electric cars with ICE cars. I made the comment that my car's battery weighs about 600 pounds and I can go about 80 miles on a full charge, on a good day (minimal heat, lights, wipers, not freeway speeds). On the other hand, I could get 5 gallons of gas that weighs just over 30 pounds and put it in my economy car and go on the order of 150 miles with almost no restrictions (except maybe excessive speed). This comparison shows just how tough it is to have enough battery power while boondocking especially with the all electric trailers, and also why generators are still so handy to have. On the other hand, regarding electric cars, here in Washington I can charge my 24 kWh battery from zero to full for less than $3.00 off the grid, and solar is even cheaper (once you install the capability).
