Hi, I also got a new medicine for my itchy skin and a spot on the back of head frozen today.

Hi, I wear a hat and a jacket most of the time; There's a lot less Sunlight in Oregon than there was when I lived in Southern California. Doctors told me that some of the damage could have happened to me about 65 years ago.

Hi, while being checked by my Dermatologist today, he saw a small Basal Cell on my back about an inch lower than my previous one. He asked me if I wanted it removed while I was there. YES!

Bob, itchy skin seems common too. I have been putting skin cream on my legs and arms and back for years and years. I get little white bumps on my back that itch and itch and itch. Nothing really works except skin cream and ignoring it. I can go many months without the bumps, then if I say to Barb: “I haven’t had one of those bumps on my back in a long time,” I am in danger. I said that in early November and in a week I had a really super itchy one appear. The lesson is never say it out loud. If you name it, it will get you. Skin cream works better than hand lotion. Some skin creams have things in them that are actually bad for skin—sounds crazy, but is true. I stopped using Nutragena for that reason.

Squamous Cell this time.

Hi, I found a bump or scab like thing on my face; It turns out to be a Squamous Cell this time. It's in front of my left ear, in the sideburn area. I will be spending the entire day having MOHs surgery on 12-24-2024.

Merry Christmas.

Hi Bob, Sorry you found something suspicious, but glad you acted on it quickly. As you know, I had squamous cell carcinoma in 2010, which was removed by Mohs surgery. Last December, I had what I thought was a hemorrhoid and wanted a GI doctor to check on it, but he told me many people get them and to just start on a high fiber diet. A month went by and it only got bigger, so my primary doctor recommended that I be seen by a general surgeon who biopsied the mass and found that it was squamous cell carcinoma. This past spring I had 6 weeks of radiation and chemotherapy. The good news is that my PET/CT scans last September and recent anoscopy show no signs of cancer and highlights the importance of having anything suspicious checked out by a doctor in a timely manner. Best wishes for a successful Mohs surgery!

Hope you are doing well Bob.

I had basil cell cancer between my left eye and ear removed several months ago. They scrapped off little pieces until they were sure they got it all—about a 3/4 x 1/4 piece removed and it healed well. A friend had melanoma on his face below his left eye and has quite a scar now—made a big hole and I suggested he have teeth tattooed on his cheek even though they closed up the hole. He says he heard women like men with scars on their face, so he is content. He is confident is was all removed. Since most of my friends and acquaintances are 70 or over, usually someone has a bandage on his face (met another one at Lowe's yesterday with a bandage on his nose).

Hi, Gene; It's been four days now and I'm doing pretty good. Last night was my last night sleeping in my recliner to keep my head up. Tonight I get to go back to bed. Today I finished my Antibiotics and I never took any pain pills. I don't want to use those pain pills; My doctor told my that I could take Tylenol if I want to, but didn't need to. My stitches come out on January 3, 2025.

Bob,

Glad you had it checked early and the results are good. My 40 yr old son had a similar incident behind his ear. Similar scars and all is well to date and I wish the same results for you.

He plays a lot of golf and the golf caps don’t provide a lot of protection. He’s a Tilley hat fan now.

Bob, glad you are doing well. I also try to keep away from pain meds, but the older I get the more acetaminophen and sometimes ibuprofen I consume. I happened to click on the first entry where you said it was only about basal cell carcinoma, but times change and it is your thread after all.

I have tried to keep the sun off my skin for decades, but childhood catches up. Pretty amazing how too much exposure can catch up with you 60 or more years later. Almost every time I see the skin guy, I get nitrogen on various precancerous spots on my head. Last time it was pretty painful as the suspect area was larger and liquid nitrogen is really cold (-320 F).

I have paid for a decent ski boat for my dermatologist aver the course of the 30+ years I’ve been seeing him. We were both pretty fresh out of college when I began seeing him and since we’re both surfers, living in a major surf town, we got along right from the start.

On my first visit he took my history. I’d moved to Honolulu with my Air Force Dad when I was 10. My nose peeled for the next 6 out of 10 years, when effective sunscreens finally appeared on the scene. New research at the time said that the folks who were most likely to get a dangerous skin cancer in later life had at least one peeling sunburn during their youth. That made me pretty much a poster boy for skin cancer at some point so he advised that I see him at least once every six months, something I’ve done religiously ever since.

I’ve had squamous cell carcinomas, basal cell carcinomas, and melanomas. I’ve had so many things burned off with nitrogen that AirGas should give me a free hoodie.

Establish a relationship with a good dermatologist and see that at least every six months. If you see something weird, call and get a cancellation appointment right away so they can check it out. When you see your Dermo, make sure to point out anything new. I actually keep a drawing of the front and back of a human torso and record anything weird, then take that to the appointment. Don’t be shy. If you’ve got something weird in your ass crack, show them that. The one thing Dermos hate worse than looking at your butt crack is having you die on them from something they didn’t catch. Don’t let a Dermo get away with a quick look. If they don’t look between your toes, make them. (Bob Marley died from a melanoma that emerged between his toes and wasn’t diagnosed until it was too late.

Last big of advice. If you do have a basal cell carcinoma on a particularly visible part of your body, like the tip of your nose as in my case, go to Palm Springs to have it treated. There are a bunch of dermatologists and surgeons who specialize in the Mose surgery which is the most effective and least invasive ways to deal with basal cell and some melanomas. They get a lot of practice and there is some competition for clients so the prices are reasonable—though probably out of network. Also, Palm Springs has a ton of super skilled RV repair people, who if you need anything done, there is probably somebody there who can get it done in a couple of days.

Hi, Gene; I did the same thing and viewed the entire thread again.

My excuses will start here:

(1.) I started this thread 12 years ago and it has stayed on topic quite well. [I was just a kid back then]

(2.) By post number 6 this thread was called a "joke" and "I ask this thread to be removed".

(3.) By post number 14 Squamous Cell was mentioned.

I think my original intentions were to keep this thread from going to broken hips, going bald, and loss of teeth ETC.

I also learned from other experiences posted here.

Bob, if you can find a person in this world who is always consistent, he is not human, but an alien space invader.

"I’ve had so many things burned off with nitrogen that AirGas should give me a free hoodie."—Brad1. It seems every time I go to the dermatologist, he uses more nitrogen. Last time I felt like he held a blow torch to my scalp—extreme heat and cold feel the same. Recently I got my first dose of eczema and cured it with cortisone cream; then the skin on my big toes started to look bad, trying cortisone one that too.

Skin is a marvelous watertight coating and when it starts to wear out, the contents (us) become more vulnerable. MOHS surgery is available not only in Palm Springs but anywhere there are dermatologists trained in it—most places, therefore. It is what I had done on my face last year. I believe as I wrote before, every few weeks I see a friend with a bandage on his or her face.
