ARRRGH! It be Talk Like a Pirate Day

Shiver me timbers! 'Tis September 19th again, already. Blow me down, sez I. All hands on deck, get a share of grog and join me on the leeward side of the ship and we'll speak of lasses, old mates and treasure from days of yore.

Yahrrr, lads!

Your post reminded me of an oarsman on our Cougar Crew squad. We practiced on the Snake River, in these low svelte wooden boats no wider than your butt and an inch from going underwater - George Pocock antiques cast off by UW - below the Boyer Dam. When the lock opened to reveal a giant tug pushing even larger barges piled impossibly high with grain bound downstream, the bandanna-wearing stroke would scream 'YAR, LADS! - LET'S BOARD THE CRAFT AND FIND THE __________ (insert appropriate pirate terms randomly here.)

Thanks for the inspiration to remember!

When ISN'T it "Drink Like a Pirate Day"? I have developed a liking for dark rum, like Kirk & Sweeney or R. L. Seales rum; very tasty.

The Argggh is from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, the scene in the cave when they come across writing on the wall that ends with Arrrrrgh. Monty Python and Mel Brooks movies and skits seem to dominate my life now. I can't help but think of 3 when someone says 5 and other things. They pop into my head and my fingers just type them out, even if it's not appropriate. It's sad

Cruzan for us. We toured the distillery before Liat put us on a flight to Antigua (intended destination was Dominica). We got through it, best that we don’t remember much...
Blackstrap! I always need to have a bottle of flavoring around. “I love to cook with rum.... Sometimes I even put it in the food!”

I missed it. Damn it! I thought about it a week ago, but celebrated too much.

Well mateys, let’s aim the cannon at the town, set it afire, and take the young maidens. At my age, I’ll have those tasty creatures help me walk around and bring me grog. Nothing much else I need anymore except my Medicare supplemental premiums paid. And I am having a trouble getting my pirate ship around the high desert.

Most spirits, most of the time, I drink straight. That's why I went to the darker rums. I have added Bumbu to my list. It's going to be a busy holiday this year.

Looks like there are several choices. There is a darker version so I'll look for that. Thanks for the tip. I like the sippin' kind, especially if the weather is cool but clear, by the campfire or just sittin' in the sun.

I have added it as an annual event on my phone's calendar. It went off at midnight and I got up and put my flag out front, then went back to bed.

As for the maidens... ever hear Jeff Foxworthy's routine on how men have very simple needs? Having them fetch the grog and walking around sounds a little like that routine.

The current bottle of Cruzan Black Strap is Diamond Estate, very sippable. But it’s whatever the ABC store has in stock.

An old family favorite from Bermuda/Caribbean vacation days.

Not sure how available it is.

It's not in either of our major liquor stores, but I've added it to my list of spirits. Never know when I'll come across it. I have kids in 3 areas of the country so I'll ask them to look for it as well. We get together for fishing trips several times a year.

Grog is rum and water. I prefer straight, as does Michaleen Oge Flynn: When I drink whiskey, I drink whiskey and when I drink water, I drink water.

(If you're a fan of "The Quiet Man", then here's the site for you:https://www.irishcentral.com/culture...iet-man-quotes )

Grog is any of a variety of alcoholic beverages. The word originally referred to a drink made with water and rum, which British Vice admiral Edward Vernon introduced into the naval squadron he commanded in the West Indies on 21 August 1740. Vernon wore a coat of grogram cloth and was nicknamed Old Grogram or Old Grog. Wikipedia
