Airstream Withdrawal - Bobtailing to Ohio

Well I'm in Akron Ohio now visiting my mother. Also saw my niece, her husband and baby... Kool. Going to get him Airstreaming before he's two!

At any rate, I decided that going to Ohio with a cold front and 30-50 mph winds expected wouldn't be the best trip with Tin Lizzie so I left her behind and came north in the Lex.

Suffering extreme A/S withdrawal, but the temps dropped to 12 degrees... and in a CCD that would have been COLD. Home tomorrow... so I can hug T.L. Planning on going to Savannah next. And of course will have to stop at that famous hangout for pink flamingoes, "South of the Border". A ticky-tacky-tourist trap redolent of the Long, Long, Long Trailer era. So tacky it's cool.

See you all tomorow, Bye

Ah, HOME again!

Getting ready to crawl into my bed under my aluminum dome and fall into a contented sleep. Really missed Lizzie while staying in that hotel. Kept looking for a foot pedal to flush!

Unfortunately the F-16 Super Hornets are doing night quals (carrier qualification landings for night time landings - they do touch and goes - tires kiss the runway and they kick in the afterburners and take off at 40 degree angle) I'm staying at Holiday Travel Park in Va Beach, and it's beautiful BUT it is just east of Naval Air Station Oceana.

I'm not complaining - I love the sound of freedom. But night quals will wake me - shake me for while until I adjust or they leave to join up with their carrier. You never oversleep in the morning when a couple of squadrons are in port.

Well, my trip was a high speed run so I didn't stop for anything but I spotted FIVE, count 'em FIVE airstreams. The first one was headed south on I-95 just south of Fredericksburg VA. It was a newer one, possibly an 04 or 05, and was a 31 footer - only two axles but Long. The next two were just north of Columbus Ohio - only about 2 miles apart if that. Both were visable from US 77 northbound on the right. Both were parked outdoors next to barns in fairly rural territory. First one was a mid 70's unit, I think a 31 footer and the other I only got a glimpse of but might have been a 25 ft Safari of fairly recent vintage. On my way back down to Virginia I spotted an Argosy in an RV lot - for sale! It was on I-76? (went west through Wheeling, to Washington PA, then turned south. It wasn't more than 10-15 miles south of Washington PA, on the west side of the road. Finally I took old highway 40 which runs parallel to the new I-68. I spotted one in a storage yard on the north side of 40, near Frostburg.

It's funny how many you start to see once you own one.

Oh it's good to be home and living in aluminum.

Paula,

I know those F-18 Hornets well. I camped my Airstream last summer at the Sea Mist Campground there at the Dam Neck navy base in VA Beach. Holiday Travel Park is closer to Oceana, so I'm sure it's a bit nosier. One of my camping neighbors was a Hornet test pilot from Pax River. He had an SOB toy hauler.

We loved Sea Mist CG and hope to go again this summer. It is only about 100 yards from our full hook-up spot ($20/night) over the dunes to the lonely beach. Just awesome!

Dam Neck

Yep, you don't get better sites than on Dam Neck. BTW don't dig down into the earth there. It used to be next to "Malbon Hog Farm" and while the surface odor has probably long since faded, two or three feet down... whew... the paint will peel off your car from the acidic stench. They've built a whole community, Redmill Farms over the main acerage of the former hog operation and every time someone decides to plant a tree they end up calling hazmat because they don't know what they've hit. until someone who has been here 25 years tells them.

Now we know why the EPA considers substances "biodegradable" if they will disintegrate within 100 years.

Gotta love those jets...2 minute intervals...I've timed them Last time I was up there they ran for almost 4 hours straight...Carrier Group had just returned from middle east duty. I live near Pope AFB, we usually get C130's, C-17's various choppers, and the A-10 Warthogs. But late the other night heard what sounded like an A-6 Intruder come in...and sure enough there it was on the ramp the next morning. After seeing the empty skies right after 9-11 and missing the sounds of any aircraft I am more than happy to hear the sounds of military aircraft....Like the sign at Beaufort MCAS says..."The sounds of Freedom are heard HERE!"

It was probably an EA-6B Prowler, the 4 seat ECM version of the A-6. The A-6 attack version was retired several years ago.

Sounds like a C-130 - cargo plane. BIG sucka's but they have one that's bigger. The C-130 will carry tanks and self propelled guns. The side doors are a carryover from WWII - waist gunner doors, though I doubt if they actually carry side guns. Lord knows you ought to see the big 8 engine bombers. Rarely seen around here, but when they come in they blot out the sun!

We gots C130's...and yes they still make them with guns...Called a C130 Spectre or Spooky..viscious, they can make a pass over an area the size of a football field and put a round in every square foot of it! I really don't consider them large, I am used to the C-5 Galaxy
and the C-17 But IIRC the Russians have the largest cargo aircraft in the world. Aircraft are amazing to me...that something that size can even get off the ground, and moreso with all the stuff inside.
