Two loaves of bread a-rising...one seeded rye, the other cracked wheat.

Yum, real bread, ainít nothin quite like it.

If Iím going to heat my oven to 450 degrees in August, why not bake two loaves...thatís why I have a deep freeze.

So I baked my loaves yesterday, let them cool, then bagged and froze both halves of the cracked wheat and one half of the rye.

My son, then, last evening, texted me to ask if I could bring a loaf of bread for dinner today.

Being an 18-24 hour rise on the counter, my traditional Dutch Oven loaf couldnít be done for mid afternoon today, so I thought I would try modifying that one loaf recipe to make a more traditional, kneaded loaf.

3 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp yeast
about 1 cup of warm water

Mix the dry ingredients, then enough warm water to make a dough that is pliable and holds together. Knead til smooth and elastic, 8-10 minutes. Place in oiled bowl, turn to coat and let rise til doubled, about 2 hours.

Gently pat and fold a few times to shape, cover and let rise in cast iron skillet til doubled again, about 1 1/2 hours.

Slash surface with sharp knife, bake at 400 degrees about 40 minutes.

The bread was delicious, and very well received...more dense and with a finer crumb than the light and holey artisan bread. I’m very pleased with myself for being able to pull it off.

This was an interesting article, and I showed the pictures to my grands this evening, just to give them some sense of the privileged life they live in this time and this country.

They cannot imagine a life or world where children as young as toddlers work all day instead of playing or being in school.

Bread looks delicious, kids look hungry.

It's amazing what all our ancestors went thru for daily survival.

It really is, and many of these children were also orphans or abandoned and living on the streets or wherever they could find a spot...struggling for survival and to meet basic needs 24 hours a day.

It was a time when children had little in the way of formal rights or protections, and the brave photographer this article is about was able to change that by publicizing their plight.

My oven is running for the third day in a row, baking chocolate chip cookies to take to my sister in law/her crew later today...along with two big pans of a pasta bake I made yesterday that will be MREís for a couple of days.

Itís what one does when tragedy strikes...we feed our loved ones.

I’ve been reading this book the past few evenings, which is very, very good...tho raw in many ways, and not for the faint of heart nor prudish.

https://www.amazon.com/Bronze-Horsem.../dp/006185414X

It is a story of love and war, very well written and easy to relate to if you have ever been deeply in love, ever been so fortunate to have had the experience of losing yourself in another, your very skin and soul becoming theirs, and theirs yours.

We had that kind of deep and abiding bond, always, thru good and difficult and some bad times, life being life and both of us having rather complicated selves...the bond was always there, the love was always there, pulling us back together during hard times, keeping us together and going.

Reading this book has reminded me of falling in love, and being in love, with Douglas Dwight Hayes, and as I’m remembering and relating and identifying with the feelings described as I read I keep getting brief whiffs of cigarette smoke...tho I am alone in the house and have never taken a single puff of a cigarette in my life, I smell for an instant cigarette smoke.

Doug smoked most of his life, tho had quit the 5 years before he died I’m sure that’s what ultimately killed him. He loved smoking cigarettes, it was a part of him and who he was, and he always said he could snatch a lit cigarette from someone’s hand and start again in an instant.

“Don’t think of it as a nasty habit, think of it as a drug that hits the brain in 9 seconds”, he would say.

He was in recovery when he died, but still a smoker in his heart.

So, I wonder, is his spirit hovering near, smoking a cigarette, his arm around me and reading over my shoulder...smiling slightly and remembering?

I can just see him.

I have stumbled some in widowhood, and made some changes in my life, but I believe he is proud of me, encourages me, and steps in to help me when needed.

I am grateful for having found this book, reminding me of the best of times with this man, and how lucky I am to have loved and been loved in my life.

There has been a great deal in the news the past few days, from politics to priests , which I would like to comment on, but shanít do so here...

This, however, is an incredibly sad state of affairs I can speak to....what in the world were they thinking?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/natio...=.1a7f04fe78c1

Iím sure it took him a minute to decide to speak up and address it.

Interesting, and thanks for sharing that, as I’ve been following this story and there has not been any indication or reporting that the money is or even may be still there.

Sounds from this show like his money and their money were combined in their account, and news reports I think from today are the BMW has been taken by the police and there is a criminal investigation.

It will be interesting to see what and how this all shakes out...

Maggie

On edit: this video clip seem to be from the August 27th show, this article from two days ago may be more accurate as to the current status of things

What is mad saddening is that the couple will be pleading the fifth on Mondayís deposition. If they were innocent, I would think that they would have opened their books and mouths to which hole the money ran into. Two sides creates a corner of shadow.

Yes.

The judge ordered them to transfer what was left of the money into an account handled by Bobbittís lawyers, and they failed to meet that deadline, which would have been a simple enough start...

A good deed took a wrong turn.

I wonder .... have peopleís character and morals changed over these last fifty years?! Or do you suppose people havenít shed their skins and the change is rather in our overflowing access to information and the dirty laundry that we wouldnít otherwise have known about? I would enjoy reading your perspective on this.

I believe it’s the latter, joannadanna.

People are and always have been, throughout eternity, just people...flawed human beings, to a greater or lesser degree, all making mistakes, some mistakes bigger than others, some you learn from and others you don’t, et al.

People have developed character, and an active moral compass, or don’t to varying degrees. It’s the opportunities to fail and be exposed on a worldwide scale that have changed.

The instant access to “news” does beg of us absorbing it that we pause to get both sides of the story particularly before passing judgment, as liars often get to tell their story first, as the man said...I think Comey said that.

Personally, from my experience and perspective, tales told in the light, spoken aloud to the accused, are more likely to have a factual basis and at least give the accused the opportunity to respond.

Rumor, gossip, innuendo, malicious gossip are more often the stuff of lies and half truths...and are so much more entertaining to others than a discussion where both the accused and accusers can speak to an issue.

I despise it, and choose not to be around it. It’s toxic and destructive.

Johnny Bobbitt is fighting some personal demons, but I suspect he anguished over going public with this.

When a moral center fails, tho, on an individual or systemic level, others must speak up.

That’s what I believe.

A Different Life II

Maggie my view is that through adaption, our moral consciousness has been subcutaneously scalped. If our hair and skin color has changed out of environmental adaption - then why not our brains and the neuro synaptic bog which sparks our thoughts and actions.
I do think that the proliferation and outstretched technologic pipeline, have played a significant part in warping our core strengths. In many ways, my fatherís father is a different Animalia than my sonís son.

Hmm, thatís an interesting concept, joannadanna, and we may well be talking of two sides of the same coin.

On another note, knowing it was fixiní to rain for days, I got 60lbs of grass seed down on my lawn before we packed the Interstate and headed out yesterday for 10-12 days.

The final HistoriCorps project for this year is coming up...more later.

Iíve got my flat flowers in place, and am going to get some interior pictures...

Had to comment on the scam with the couple/veteran.... In the 1940's or 1950's I believe there was a radio show called the "Confidence Man" or something like that. The opening line was "he will pat you on the back with one hand and pick your pocket with the other".

Not much has changed. Almost anyone can fall for a confidence scheme. The sociopaths who work this trade are quite skilled in appealing to our nature of wanting to help others or to our greed and it is most likely not going to change.

Each of us does, however, have the choice as to how we go about giving assistance and this means we are essentially responsible for our own behavior, sometimes being fooled. Please include me in the group who is sometimes fooled.....

We are almost in place for the project this week, took two days to meander here and have encountered lots and lots of rain.

We are currently hanging out in a small town, checking in with kids, making phone calls, checking email, etc., but looks like otherwise signal will be limited-to-none until we leave this project at the weekend, so donít anyone worry about us.

My sister in lawís mother died in the night on Thursday, and my dear friend in Minnesota currently has two serious medical crises going with siblings...one of whom has guardianship of her three, half grown grandchildren.

Thereís a lot of that out there, you know, grandparents raising grandkids because a child has gone off the rails and not come back...I am thankful for families that step up in any situation, and do what needs to be done.

It is raining, but temps have dropped, we are snug and water tight...
