colder than a well-diggers ass

John used to say that too. Seems we have some memories in common.

My Mom and Dad had bunches of "that type of sayings", and I find that I will occasionally use them at appropriate times! The old times just have a way of sticking in my memories. Those were days when life seemed simpler...and more innocent. Those days were harder, one needed to dig deep and work hard for what was needed.... Less complicated.

Little house was a bit of a wreck, what with coming home, preparations to leave Monday with the grands, then again on the 1st for three months in the Interstate, presents needing wrapped, etc....stuff a bit of everywhere, but it is better now as I have done my usual Friday tear thru.

Still lots of things in piles, but my piles are now tidy.

I removed this switchplate cover from the back bedroom this morning...Doug's man-cave since we have had the house to ourselves.

His youngest boy made this for his Dad for Father's Day when he was about 5, I think, and its' well worn surface attests to how much Doug cherished this, and that he proudly displayed it wherever he lived.

After Doug died, Jake would go into that back bedroom and just sob, looking at the photos, prints and other things of his Dad's that were/are still on the walls back there...and, there was this switchplate, made by him, that his Dad had kept and used all these years.

Jake couldn't bring himself to remove it, as his Dad had been the last to touch it, and was going to do it when he felt able, but now it will go to his sister, as is only right.

Doug was deeply sentimental, as was Jake...and, yes, Doug kissed my forehead, said he was sorry, made me laugh, etc...all those things.

A highly intelligent, very complicated man....and most importantly, a very good man.

Hi Carroll, and Merry Christmas to you and Paula!

I cannot imagine how beautiful snow would be in your spot of paradise on Orcas...it almost brings a tear to my eye to think of it.

Enjoy, and hugs to you both.

I am loving my homemade bath salts.

I had some jojoba oil with lavender and rosemary, so used that for the oil ingredient, added a bit more lavender essential oil, and about a teaspoon of rose essential oil.

I made a big batch, using an entire bag of Epsom Salts, mixed it all up and put it in a large jar. Lovely scented, and moisturizing.

The grand-girls will say it doesn't have bubbles, but that's okay, more for me.

Many health benefits from the magnesium sulfate, which you absorb thru your skin.

Doug happened upon this item, while visiting his father's last surviving brother in Oregon some years ago...and when the uncle gave it to him, Doug wept tears of joy and gratitude.

An advertising item for the rock quarry Doug's Dad ran in the 1940's with a brother, this hung in the back bedroom until he died, at which time it went to Jake.

Now hanging at Doug's daughters' home in Iowa City...

A treasured memento of a man long dead, and a time past...notice the phone numbers.

Half full or half empty doesn't really matter as long as there is a pitcher handy for refills.

So true, Gerard, and may a full pitcher always be at the ready.

I'm ready for tomorrow...cookies are baked and frosted, gifts are wrapped, roll dough is in the frig to bake up in the am.

It's been a full day.

If I were a football fan, I might have had a different day, but this is what I do at Christmas and what I have done by myself since sweet hubby left.

Not ready to give these things up, nor are the grands ready for that to happen, tho I have definitely scaled back in my solo life.

Have a good holiday out there in Oregon, Miss Gail, and think about making a trip to the Midwest in 2017...

We're cooking up a storm, some folks coming over for Christmas Eve dinner tonight. Made a very fancy boneless leg of lamb from scratch (even re-rolled and tied it myself, with seasonings inside), sure do hope it comes out good. Used a recipe from Cooks Illustrated - their recipes are always quite complicated but they are genuinely tested and generally come out good.

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, Cheery Chanukah, and happy holidays.

And to you, Bill.

Leg of lamb sounds good, haven't had that in decades...

Have had a very nice day at my son's...a guest, bearing fresh rolls and homemade jam from my freezer.

We shared the last bottle of Crimson Cranberry Wine from the Amana Colonies...ruby red and delicious, perfect.

My kids surprised me with a joint gift...a Smart TV to go with the home wifi I added last spring. I will be able to watch Netflix on my smart screen, not just my IPad mini. Yikes.

Son was apparently over here in my absence, measuring and figuring, to find one that would fit in my on-the-small-side entertainment center , and will get it set up for me in the next few days while I am away with the kids.

I don't know if I'm ready for such a high-tech television, but I now have one and he is a patient teacher, so I guess I will learn.

Those learning curves get more difficult as we age.

Off to Iowa in the morning.

Hope everyone has had a day of peace and love, however you celebrate.
