Dear daughter and I did a bit of running this afternoon, while large hunks of beef and portobello mushrooms cook in their crockpot for dinner.

It's what mothers do...we cook.

Picked up some more yarn, and darling SIL wishes to take the scarves I have made this trip in to work with him to give to whomever.

I will of course oblige, as I would do almost anything for him.

Off to see the house in the morning!

I am so thrilled for them, who will feel they are on a vacation from which they do not need to return home....having always lived in small, NYC apartments, whose limited windows face brick walls.

I want them to video his aging English bulldog when he goes into the fenced-in back yard for the first time....always an apartment dog, a yard will be something entirely new.

Enjoying our visit, hanging out and catching up. I have introduced them to prosecco.

Heading south two weeks from tomorrow.

The house is really lovely, and in a nice, older neighborhood...on the small side, some would say, but not me, and perfect for the two of them.

Obviously a home well loved, nurtured, and cared for.

While the inspector was going thru things with my daughter and SIL, I got a call from Doug's daughter that she'd had a call from the ER and was on her way to Cedar Rapids, where Doug's youngest son had been brought.

He had an accident sometime during the night, got out of the car and tried to climb up a steep and rocky embankment, fell and was found this morning.

Temps were -15 degrees with -30 windchill overnight, and he seemed to have been there for some time when found mid morning today. Apparently died where he fell.

She asked me to channel her Dad to help her brother, as I was closer to her Dad than anyone...I told her he was already there, and would take care of him now.

Three deaths in that family in less than three years. Lots for everyone to bear.

If you are a praying person, please send some to Iowa.

I have some house pictures, but will post them another time.

Flying home tomorrow, temps are dropping here and will be even colder in Illinois.

Maggie

Maggie, very sorry to hear about Doug's son.

Horrific accident, a great tragedy, to a family that has suffered much and during the holidays.

Glad the little house was a joyful moment for you all. Safe travels home.

Thank you, ladies. It seems unreal, as sudden death does.

He and I were not close, but friendly, and he was especially kind to me after Doug died.

I am very sad for them all.

You know, I have felt the past few weeks that Doug was still there, for and with me, but not as close as he has been in the past.

I attributed this to feeling myself increasingly stronger, and more solid underfoot, not needing him as much but firmly believing he was there if I did.

I now wonder if Doug knew his son's time was near, and was staying especially close to him...to be with him, and to help him at the end.

His son was not alone, injured and dying outside in frigid temps...his Dad was with him.

We don't want our loved ones to be alone when they die, but they aren't ever alone, even if there is no physical body with them.

It is comforting to believe.

Doug's son is being cremated, with a celebration of life service at some later time.

I am glad for his immediate family that they will be without the pressure and task-intense process of planning and having a funeral, as I recall this as being very difficult for us.

The new house is a small Cape Cod, with wood floors and ceramic tile throughout.

Stained and leaded glass hanging light fixtures, granite countertops and kitchen island, ceiling fans in every room, an attic fan, two sets of French doors leading to a deck/patio, and a full, unfinished basement.

Added onto once, this addition is my favorite room...

This fireplace is in what I would call the sitting room...

It is cozy, comfortable and well cared for. What more could one want?

The house is in Orange County, where an inordinately large percentage of the population are NYC police and firefighters, so they will be close to co-workers for the first time in their married lives.

I am happy for them.

Sad to here of the death of Doug's son. Sending prayers and condolences.

Both of us will not have any funeral nor service for the reasons you mentioned. Simply buried in a local National Cemetery.

Prayers

Bud

Thanks, folks.

They are in shock back there, but there's lots of support so they will get thru it, as we just do.

Doug's daughter is highly capable, and will probably be the in-charge person for everything needing to be done now...she helped tremendously when her Dad died, and is not only much younger but emotionally much stronger than their mother.

It's what strong women do...we handle things.

At the airport, awaiting first leg of trip to Philadelphia...

Maggie, I am sending prayers and rosary for your young step son as well as your family. God bless and keep him.

For the purpose of avoiding unnecessary stress and unreasonable financial strain...Joe had made arrangements for cremation prior to his death, and I have done the same for Deb and myself, with instructions for a private memorial with family and close friends. No obituary in newspapers or internet avoids burglars from being aware of easy house robbing chances. The death of a loved one is certainly enough to endure.

Your daughter and SIL must be so happy to have found a well appointed and cared for older home. The photos you show are nice. I like the "newer room" and that fireplace will be nice to snuggle next to!

Safe travels back home. Evelyn.
