2020 warning
The really funny bit was that my boss at the time called me to his office and asked me what I knew about COBOL. I told him it stood for “Compiles Only Because Of Luck” and the Gracie was a family friend. His reply was, good enough, go set us up, we’re doing COBOL from now until Y2K.
The best part was the Dilbert cartoon that came out that week, where the pointy haired boss asks Dilbert if he knows any COBOL programmers as Bob the Dinosaur walks up. Bob admits he’s was often mistaken for one.
Ah well, if the shoe fits...since I was the senior programmer on the project at that point, I was stuck. BTW, I never formally learned COBOL or JCL but I’m one of those crazies that learns new stuff in a heck of a hurry. It took me about 6 weeks to become an “expert”.
