1/10th scale airstream (and member intro)

Hello everyone!
Before I start, I sorry if this is in the wrong forum or if the images are in the wrong format.

Ok, let me start off with my non-existant history with these wonderful trailers. I do not own one and I never have owned one, but I really really really wish I could have one.......

So, insted of getting a real one, I thought I would build myself a 1/10th scale one.

I started out with some sheet aluminium and got to work. I am modeling it after the newer Ocean Breeze 27FB. Here are the progress photos

So that is where I am at.

Here is my tow vehicle:

1/10th scale replica 1970's Chevy Blazer K5 4x4

Thanks for looking guys!

WOW !! That is pure coolness. I take it that your TV is a radio controlled car, eh, truck and it'll pull the scale Airstream to the campground? How are you planning to do the compound curve end segments? What is your tongue weight?

Welcome to the Forum. Thanks for sharing.
Good work to this point. The leaf spring suspension is a nice addition.
I've done plenty of model work in brass, tin and plastic. How are you planning to bond the aluminum? Are you going to emboss rivet lines?
The compound curves for the end caps would be hard enough in brass let alone aluminum. You're a braver man than I.
Good luck, keep us posted.

Tom.

Wow thank you guys!

Tounge weight is about 10 ounces. As far as compound curve end segments, I actually hadn't thought of that. I might later down the road! I am using rivets

oh jeez, I can see the arguments over axles, wheel balancing, and how to polish already, not to mention if the TV is up for the job......

it's a surrogate...

If you can do this kind of meticulous work, it won't be too long before you're restoring a full size vintage unit.

Seriously you may find new prices too high, but look at the classifieds here, and start searching craigslist, etc. You have aluminitis, only a real airstream will fix it.

Yes, I have a feeling the TV might not be satisfactory, so I might use my widescreen

Wheel balancing is neglegable, and I think I'll use the good ol' Dremel to polish

Yes, the new ones are probably very expensive. I took a look at some at the local RV show and oh boy! Plus, you just cant pass up the awesome experiance of resto work

An ambitious project! If all else fails you may want to revise your model to a 1950's vintage Airstream. . . The curved ends were composed of 13 wedge shaped panels each of which was a developed (i.e. single-curved) shape. Takes a lot of rivets, though!

Welcome to the forums, and good luck!

I bet you could sell enough of those little ones around here to buy a real one.
But then you wouldn't have any time to enjoy the real one.

That's pretty cool, no that's real cool. I agree with an earlier post...get really good at that and you will have plenty to make for folks who would love to have a mini replica of the large one outside.
