Speedometer head for 1986😐

I need to replace my speedometer head on my 1986 CLASSIC 345

Would anyone have one for sale or suggest a place to buy one.

Your help would be greatly appreciated

Look up Tele-Flex gauges on E Bay, got one 2 years ago for my 1989 325LE. Exact match, brand new, about $30.00 Regards, Bob

Hi Bob
Is the speedometer head difficult to change?

Thanks
Howard

Not at all...just take your time...everything is plastic behind the dash, also your will probably have to file the threads off the new speedometer to fit the speedo cable and re-use the original horse shoe clip to hold the original cable onto the new head. Regards, Bob

Old school technology = If you can't find a replacement speedo head, send your old one to a speedo shop.

Speedo/Cable Symptoms...?

My '83 310 speedometer flutters. This is an issue for the cruise control and I guess for the Gear Vendor over/under drive control also.

Since the Gear Vendor adds a link to the speedo cable I was wondering if it was helping to bind a part of the cable. But also, when the oil pressure gauge was replaced, I think the speedo cable might have been pulled around a bit.

So my first question is, what led you to go for a replacement speedo head? Was the needle fluttering and sometimes a whining sound coming from it?

Thanks!

Lubed Cable(s) with Graphite

At least some of my speedo needle flutter was remedied by pulling the cable and cleaning it with WD-40 then spraying with 'dry' graphite.

My 310 has cruise control and Gear Vendor, so there are two speed transducers and three cable segments involved.

So far there's flutter up to about 30mph then very stable at higher speeds. So at least the cruise control and Gear Vendor are happy.

Maybe I still need to replace the speedo head...

Take your rig to a speedometer shop. They have spare parts for nearly all speedometers and can make custom speedo cables. We used to have an old 1978 Chevy pickup, and they replaced the broken needle, the extra-long speedo cable and a gear or something at the transmission housing. Price was reasonable, and the speedometer worked good as new when they got done.
