rusty hitch pins

how cs i keep my hitch pins cotter pin from rusting?

after a few weeks, rust starts to appear

its spring now, and i use a wooden plug to fill the square hole and use the hitch and cutter pin to keep it in
its totally rusty.
ill see if primer and paint will work

any other suggestions

Go south for the winter, where there is no road salt

Fluid Film or a similar product from your local auto parts store. Spray down your entire hitch area and it will prevent or stop rust from continuing. It takes a couple of weeks for this stuff to completely dry so avoid brushing up against the area for a while.

i replaced the rusted pins with these

You may get more response if you post in the trailer section, the motorhome guys don't tend to have this problem.

Ha! Motorhomes also have trailer hitches, and some of us actually use them— not only for towing trailers, but also towing toads, mounting a bike rack or a rack for a handicapped mobility device (scooters), or a cargo tray or cargo box for additional storage. We get rusty pins, too.
