Normal "RPM" for 280 Diesel?

I may have posted this on the wrong page but I'll try here- We just moved into a 1982 diesel 280 and being new to the diesel engine I was curious what RPM should I run @ 55mph. I'm assuming that it has a stock transmission and we are running @ 3000 RPM. It seems/feels like I should have another gear and my tach only goes to 4000.

I am not familiar with a 280 but good diesels make max torque by 1600 rpm.
I never run my Diesels past 3000 rpm. Diesels get the job done with massive low speed torque, high rpm is for gas motors.

That is what I thought and I should add that this is an Isuzu engine in a 28' MH. I see that I should have posted this in the "mech" section..
