My 34' MH came with an Onan 6.5kw. It will power both 13,500 btu AC units together. I have to turn 1 off if I want to use the microwave. If you're thinking of adding, decide on what you will need to power before making a purchase. My Onan is loud in comparison to Hondas & Yamahas. Been thinking of replacing with a quieter unit, but haven't found anything as powerful that will fit into the generator compartment yet.
My buddy bought a new/ used Race trailer 30 to 40 ft long. He has a lift ect plus living quarters. He has them little Hondas lined up in his generator compartment. Alot of maintenance and wireing. It is the way the trailer came. He said he wouldnt have done it that way. I dont know pros or cons to that. I always seggest more than you need, it is easier on the system or unit that way.
I looked at a lot of different brands when we had to replace our original Onan for our 83 MH. We decided on the Guardian Quietpact 6500W LPG from Northern Tool. It fits fine in the compartment and so far it works great. We were pleased with the price and preformance.
Looks like most motorhomes would use a larger generator than what I had mentioned. The Onan 3600 will start and run one air conditioner and some lights. So that size genset would be found in the smaller motorhomes. Or possibly a trailer application. Although, at about 174#'s it would have to be mounted in a subfloor box and not really be portable application. Thanks, everyone I found your answers helpful.
For our home we have a 10+KW generator.
For our trailer, nothing.
For us that is what we need, want.
What are your electrical requirements?
I like quiet more than a lot of other things.
