Gas Gauge

I recently put in a new gas take in my 1988 345 airstream but the gas gauge they installed moves about 1/2 tank when driving. Does anyone have any recomendations to get a stable gas tank level indicator installed?

Jim, I know of several people that have used this 90 ohm sending unit as a replacement for their original one. I have it in my tank but the tank is not yet in service so I can't say for a fact that it works.

You'll need to drop your tank and most likely rework the opening for the sending unit.

Is your gas tank sending unit working well? My gas gage still jumps all over the place but I don't know what gas gage sending unit they have installed.

My Argosy isn't driveable yet and probably won't be until this summer so I won't know until then if the gauge works or not. I'm pretty sure there is someone else on the forum who used the same gauge.

The gauges in your coach were made by Teleflex and from everything I've been able to find out is Airstream set the system up to use the same 0-90 ohm signal that was standard for GM at the time.

Does your sending unit work at all? If so take a resistance reading with the arm in one position and then at the other position. If one end is around 0 and the other is around 90 then it should work.

It sounds like the gas tank doesn't have any baffles in it. If that's the case a longer sending you will probably help but it's hard to say how much until you try it.

The older 'quadrant' style gauges came with a resistor that sits across the terminals to slow down the response to changes in signal from the sender....maybe your new gauge is meant to have something similar?

Wow that is a awesome price, the OEM units, if you can find them, are a fortune.
One note on that unit, it does not have the fuel supply & return line in the flange, I bet they could be added.

Martin, the original Teleflex fuel gauge I pulled from the 345 had a similar resistor in place. If you look at the first photo you can see it in the 2nd gauge from the right on the bottom row.



Here's a close up of a Teleflex 0-90 ohm propane gauge I bought that also has the resistor in place.
