Coach AC questions

This may be a simply answered and even dumb couple of questions but here I go.
I have a 1974 20' Airstream Argosy MH. When plugged into 110 the AC work perfect. Does the generator need to be operating for the AC to run while driving the vehicle? Front dash air operates fine. Just get no action at all out of the roof AC unless plugged in.
Thanks,
Bird

The house ac will operate only on 120 from either shore power or generator. You can run the genny while driving to help cool the coach.

Like avionstream said, the generator will have to run for the rooftop AC to work. Make sure the generator runs smooth (no surging!) while the AC is running. It might surge a little with no load on it, thats how they were designed, but when you turn the AC on (or another large load such as a vacuum cleaner) it should run smooth. With the surging, the engine RPMs fluctuate which changes the voltage output of the generator which could damage the AC unit.
