Cheap Backup Camera
I was not pleased with the very poor picture quality of the Furrion wireless backup camera on my old (non-AS) trailer, so when I got an Airstream I decided to look for alternatives. I am only interested in a view during actual backing up, not as I'm driving, which opens up more possible solutions.
I bought a WyzeCam 1080p camera from Amazon for $26. It's a WiFi camera meant for use in home surveillance. Since it needs USB power, I am using an old USB battery that I already had. I thought about mounting options and decided to only mount it when I need it, using a 3M Command velcro strip. The battery is suspended from the license plate, again only when backing up.
For the WiFi router, I decided to simply use my cell phone with tethering on. It works very well and I have no problems getting a good signal through the 22FB Sport to the tow vehicle. I may try running the Wyze Cam app on a tablet, although the picture on my phone is already much better than the Furrion's, and a larger display may not be necessary.
I'll probably experiment with more permanent, perhaps weatherproof, solutions, but the quality is excellent and the price can't get much better.
