'04 Land Yacht Generator Question

When I have the generator running on my '04 Land Yacht 30, and I turn Off the House Battery Switch at the door of the MH, the generator shuts down. Is that normal? Does it need battery power to continue running?

Thanks folks!

Our Genset is much older, but that does not sound right. It should have its own source of electricity to spark the coil and plugs. I'm pretty sure ours runs off the vehicle battery which you can't turn off.

Thanks for the response.......

This Genset definitely starts off the House batteries. The '04 has separate Chassis and House battery On/Off Switches, so I'm sure of it.

The genset should produce spark from it's own power source once started.

Can you start the genny with the house battery switch in off position? I can't recall how mine works will check it out later to-day. BTW my genny is the Onan 5.5BGM, what is yours? Also, have you ever changed the rear spark plug on yours?

No, the House Battery switch must be On.

The Chassis Battery switch is irrelevant; On or Off, makes no difference.

The generator is an Onan Marquis Gold 5500; 186 hours.

Never changed plugs, as it starts and runs fine. I've only owned the rig for 2 months.

Is it possible for an electronic magneto to go bad on a 186 hour unit?

It's not the hours... It's the lack of use that hurts generators. My Onan Marquis 7000 (not Gold) will run with no battery connected once it's started. I'm looking for the service manual for your genset. If I get a copy I'll pass it on. If you can post the model number and serial number that will help locate it.

If your interested I did find a copy of the factory service manual for your genset in PDF format. It should give you all the diagnostics information you're looking for. You can download it at this link 983-0501D.pdf or I can email it to you if you want.

On my ASLY2000 the Marquis 5.5 BGM runs with or without the switch at door in either off or on positions. Not sure about your coach. Here is a link to www.flightsystems.com for the rv generator troubleshooting guide. Your coach electrical schematic might help.

Steve
