What color is your tongue?

I'm curious as to what color the tongue of the '61 Bambi was from the factory. Any ideas? Oh, and one propane tank or two?

This may seem an unusual answer, but it is something that I learned from the original owners of my 1964 Overlander. When they repainted the tongue and rear bumper on the Overlander, they went to the local farm store and purchased a gallon of silver barn roof paint. That is what I continue to use to this day . . . the one time that I was living in an area where the local farm store was out of silver barn roof paint, I utilized Rust-Oleum silver and found it to be a good substitute. There are a number of photos from 1961 era publications in this link that illustrate 1961 Airtreams with flat silver color paint on bumpers and tongues. The link noted above also illustrates that the Bambi had one LP tank as standard, but it is my understanding that a second tank was a reasonably priced option. There is an interesting article about the 1961 Bambi toward the bottom of this link.

A very good friend of mine was a long-time owner of a 1961 Bambi, and I know that she always had the bumper and tongue on hers painted a flat silver. She traveled extensively with hers and had twin 20-pound LP tanks on hers, but I believe that these were a later addition rather than the original.

Good luck with your Bambi!

Kevin

Yes, my Dad had Airstreams in the 60's, and the tongue and rear bumper was painted aluminum. I distinctly remember because it was my job to repaint them every year.

Thanks for the help! I appreciate the stories and the articles were fun to read. I'm making progress with my Bambi, one Friday at a time!
