sorry to break it to you but this thread is almost two years old. have no fear though, keep searching, it usually takes an inordinate amount of time to find your airstream, especially if you want to be under 20'.

David was so kind to respond and let me know that the thread was ancient. I'm feeling a little that way too! It seems that now, especially in California, the Airstream is worth it's weight in Google stock. It finally hit me that Bambi's are the Rolls of motor homes and there was no way I could afford one of them so I put a bid in on Ebay for a Caravell- 70's funky, dirty, started to be torn apart- it went for close to 9K. I am starting to think Dodge. Madeline

As David alluded to... it takes patience. A few years back I was in the market for an antique truck. I thought I would never find the one I wanted at a price I could afford but eventually I did. There is more to the story though... since then I have seen MANY trucks that were more like what I wanted for less money than I paid.

The moral of the story is, be prepared for when the time comes... even if it is a long time coming.

hang in there. the caravel is a good option and they can be found for around 4500 for somewhat decent condition, it'll just take a little patience. i remember seeing two in my search, one in the bay area and one in illinois (i was only looking to spend $3000 because i planned on doing a complete renovation)

when i was looking for my airstream, i set up in my favorites every craiglist in california, nevada, and arizona and checked it everyday. they are out there.

my biggest advice for you right now is to spend time on the forum looking at everything you can in the bambi and caravel forum so you'll have all the info you need when one does come up, you can make a quick informed decision. because when the smaller ones come up, you need to act fast, because they go really fast.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Personally, I love the Vintage trailers, but you should get what works for you. Keep in mind that the "newer" they are the heavier they are. It can't hurt to take a look at any and all you find. This will do wonders for helping you decide what you really want. Just remember to be patient.

FYI... Here is a link to a '48 Wee Wind that is currently on eBay. This is a really small one.

seems like steve an i are taking turns on this one, so here i go

there's been several threads on here about vintage vs. newer. what it all boils down to IMHO is do you really want a project that could take a year or more, or do you want to buy something you can hook up and go. believe me there are many times over the course of this last year when i thought, "boy if i just bought something newer, i could actually be out camping this weekend". i have no regrets on the route i've taken but i did underestimate the challenge of it all. anything older than twenty years is going to need some sort of attention whether you do the work yourself or pay someone to do it.

my advice to someone not sure which way to go would be to buy newer.

I have owned a Bambi and a Caravel side by side. I bought the Bambi because it was adorable, but once I had them both, I realized I could never be happy in something that small. I kept my caravel, and I love it. I think the extra couple feet and what I consider a better floorplan make all the difference in the world. But that's just my opinion.

You should definitly check out a few trailers, maybe go to some rallys and see some in person (folks are almost always happy to invite you in to have a look around) before you decide what you really think you can live with and how you will use it. Then start seriously looking for the right one.
