What is this thing on our Argosy Motorhome?

We have have finally gotten started on the engine and suspension rebuild for our 20' Argosy Motorhome. In the photo attached I've circled a component that is tied into the power brake circuit. I've never seen anything quite like it before and was wondering if anyone had a clue as to what its function in life is.

One end of the cylinder is connected to the hydro-boost unit and the other end goes to a Tee where other brake lines appear to connect.

So, anyone know what it is and is it really needed

Thanks!

Brad

Brad, I don't see the power steering lines. Did the PO remove the power steering, and install manual? If so, that may be an accumulator for the hydroboost.

Terry,

The power steering gear is still installed and the lines are there. Unfortunately I don't have good detailed pictures of that area. The Argosy is about 1700 miles from me right now so I won't be able to look closer until next month.

Here are a couple of photos of the power steering gear hookup.

Keep in mind the PO installed a 350 and never completed the installation. I've since pulled the 350 and am having a 454 rebuilt to go in its place. So the power steering system may not be fully hooked up at the moment. Its kinda like putting a jigsaw puzzle together without a picture of what it supposed to look like .

I suppose it could be a filter although why it would appear to be in the pressure side and not the return side seems a little strange.

I think what I will likely end up doing is plumb the brakes and power steering to match our 1984 310. The only difference is the 74 Argosy doesn't have rear disk brakes where the 310 does.

Thanks!

I finally figured out what that cylinder is. Last weekend I went to the Pomona swap meet and managed to find a service manual for the 74 model light trucks. In looking through it I found that its called a Spring Accumulator. Its function is to store hydraulic fluid under high pressure from the power steering pump and should the engine die or power steering pump fail its designed to provide up to 3 power assisted pumps of the brake pedal in the event of an emergency.

Searching on Google for possible replacement sources came up empty. I have no idea if this one is good or bad. According to the service manual there is only an o-ring on the internal piston and possible some sort of seal/o-ring on the relief valve spring assembly. Each end is sealed via the pipe connection. The manual also states not to try and dismantle the accumulator because the springs are compressed under "high" pressure.

I think I'll wait until I get things running to see whether I need to replace it or not. The only issue I see with it would be if the piston o-ring is bad the pressure from the pump would bleed through the accumulator back to the power steering pump reservoir, effectively making it harder to push the brake pedal.
