jpg didnt make it. the switch i have has three terminals . if i understand this dwg i only need two to do the relay turn on . i dont think this sw will carry the current required to run the pump. will probably burn the contacts and limp home.
my oil pressure sender is in the front of the motor i have the switch installed . not much room there either, was glad it wasnt at the filter. the exhaust is in the way. for now i will use a toggle switch and look for a relay to isolate the pressure switch from the pump. and install later.
peter is going to like my glass filter install. will post a jpg of the pump later.

peter it is between the pickup and the pump. no trash yet that i can see.
finally got power to the pump, temp hook up . and took it for a ride up the mountain . was i suprised it did great got over the top doing 45 mph with the old carb.
came home swaped the carb for the new rebuilt carb. this carb was different . the four barrel pullof was different and it was not as tall as the other one.
took the rig for another ride after i set the idle on the carb. went up the mountain was i supprised topped the mountion doing 52 mph . both trips were with the electric pump on. on the way home i busted the temp switch in the off position.
didnt have time to do the jpj before the sun went down but first thing tomorrow. need to do the mixture adjustments i think it is running a little on the lean side.

Good deal on the improvement, Al!
When I got stuck at the Colorado/New Mexico Border this summer, first thing I did was to crawl under the rear and visually inspect the glass filter. Looked good to me. So I exchanged the Ignition module. No change. So I removed the filter and noticed upon closer inspection that it was clogged up with tiny particles. That was after 1200 miles. The next time it was 600, after that 400.
And remember I also removed my tank and cleaned it out as good as I could. But it seems that the more I drove the more stuff got knocked loose.
Thats why I moved the big canister first in line.

i didnt have a lot of trash in the tank on any of the previous drains . i havent moved the big canister yet but that can be done with a little work.
i couldnt belive the power i picked up . the old carb i had was no good from the git . it worked but not like the new one.
im thinking i will change out the manual fuel pump while im at it. it is a lifetime auto zone pump. cost to replace would be the price of gas to pick it up. if that pump is working correctly it should provide enough gas. but we know it doesnt. is it worth the effort????

Its the canister type fuel filter I have been running my mouth about. Fram P1146G Fuel Filter. It used to be mid coach, in front of the step. It will take 30 years to clog that thing up. It looks and mounts just like an oil filter, but is even longer.

gas pumps push best

I have been reading your post as we have the same unit, so I called a friend who is the best mechanic I have ever known and he reminded me that a fuel pump pushes gas much more efficiently than it sucks gas, especially for a long distance or there is a small air leak.

He also said many 454's in trucks had service bulletins in the 1980's to install a fuel pump in the back in or near the tank and put a plate on the front where the mech. fuel pump is to replace it. Most people just added the rear pump as it assisted the front pump and since they are low pressure compaired to fuel injected systems on newer units, the the main worry is to have enough pressure not really too much as long as the pump is meant for carb. systems. He saw no reason for an on and off switch to be used for this reason.

lol, jem

the on off switch is a easy way to get the gas when you want it. the permanent fix is a oil pressure switch and a relay to turn the pump on and off. i really dont need the electric pump except when i get in a hard pull and need the extra gas for the carb when all four barrels are sucking gas.
the switch is an interim fix untill i get the relay and drawing to install . then the switch will be for my aux fan im going to install to help the radiator . and that will be used in the hard pull situation.
i screwed up when i bought the trail blazed didnt think that car was as heavy as it is. it id really to heavy for the silver weenie. im probably fry my transmission on a long hill , even with the large external cooler.
peter im going to look for a spot to install the large canister filter where did you get yours???
thnx

It was there when I bought the rig.
Even if you don't install a filter like that, you would be better of with an inline paper element filter as the first in line.
Thats what I had in front of the elctr fuel pump before I installed the glass filter. It lasted over 3k miles before I removed it to install the glass filter for ease of inspection.
I cut it open and found lots of debris, but it did not clog up.

Fuel filter from hell...

You can go to your local auto parts/marine parts store, and get a spin-on fuel/water separator, consists of a mount, with the adapters for the correct hose sizes, a housing, and a spin-on fuel filter. This is something for everyone with a thirsty engine on a vehicle that gets used intermittently.Separator filter is about the same size as the oil filter on a small car. I had one on my boat (with chev V8 engine), and have installed them on customer's SOB Motor Homes, with good results.

Al, it looks like your pump already has an inline fuel filter, or am I mistaken?
Here is a picture of the 'filter from Hell'.
It has 1 in and 2 outs, so if someone was inclined to add the generator fuel line, it would eliminate the 1/4 tank limitation.

it did but in the relocation i took it off. not a large filter at all i put the same inline i have up front. it will fill the bill for a while. im tired of the filter change problem. i have located a source for a spin on filter , i may not get a ten pounder like you have but i will get a couple of pounds any way. wont stop untill i get one. i took the glass filter apart and it has trash in it. like you said thought i got the tank clean , but now the crap is peeling off the walls. ill post a jpg of the filter i install.

now for the end of the story

finally replaced the manual fuel pump . well that was part of the problem. it was not up to par. i can now go down the road with out the eleectric fuel pump. and can do hills ok no apparent fuel starvation problems. but switch in the electric pump and it is like i just kicked a turbo in. i think i will do what peter has done us only when needed. my electric pump has the oil pressure switch installed to a fuel pump relay. i plan to put a switch on the dash to control the relay input. lo current , switch will last forever.
this problem got some attention/$$
1. electric fuel pump
2. new carberator
3. new manual fuel pump.
4. new water seperator fuel filter.
5. new filler fose. 3ft //1 3/4 $40 retail $ 1.75 per inch retail
6. gas tank cleaned.

ebd of story i hope..

Thumbs up

good deal, Al
Since i moved my canister fuel filter to the rear, i haven't had any more problems with clogged fuel filters and it has been 1200 miles.
Had a strange thing happen on my last trip.
After pulling into my camp spot I heard this high pitch sound coming from the engine, like a vaccuum leak. Upon acceleration it didn't go away.
I removed the air filter and tried to locate the sound. It seemed to be coming from inside the carb.
Once the filter was removed and I accelerated 1 time, it went away and I haven't heard it since???
Gremlins?
