Under hood AC compressor dead

AC compressor clutch was making such a great amount of noise that I was afraid I had broken something under the doghouse. Close inspection with the engine running showed that the compressor clutch would stop turning and then start again, creating the noise. A mechanic friend of mine told me to disconnect the wires to it since that is what was making it cycle on & off for circulation, even if the AC switch at the dash was off. Now I want to replaced this huge monster with a smaller upgraded AC compressor (R124). I know that many companies offer new AC replacements and are smaller and lighter. Does anyone have a recommendation?

Hi, what kind of noise was the A/C clutch making? If it was just a frequent chirping noise, it could be caused by the clutch cycling switch senseing low pressure. If this is the case, you need to recharge your system and check for leaks.

Yes, it was that type of sound, and I know that the AC never worked "cold", so I know it's got a leak somewhere. The PO told me it had been converted already to R124 and there's a sticker to that effect. I want to replace the whole thing to something smaller and upgraded. I heard Vintage Air has replacements for these old type systems. I may look them up today.

Hi, any good, major, A/C shop should be able to set you up with a more modern and effecient compressor. Specialty shops usually charge a premium for the same thing. In my neighborhood, I would go to Lynn's Air or California Air & Refrigeration to have this done.
