Parts required for a good tune up

Hi all,

Martin has kindly agreed to parcel up some parts for me and ship them over to England (thanks Martin!) so that I can give Cosmo a good tune up. She has been running a little bit rough since we de-winterized her last month, so I want to try and replace many of the items which can cause poor engine performance. I've bought some new leads, a new EGR pipe, TBI gasket replacement set, intake manifold gasket set, HEI, knock sensor. I have a fuel filter and new fuel pump so will get those fitted.

Should I go the whole hog and get a new distributor, EGR valve etc. I don't mind buying some stuff if it leaves me with a spare (the stock parts), but I don't have the cash to go really mad. The unit (Airstream 250 7.4L TBI 4L80E) has been rock solid over the past eight years, but many of the items look like they have been there since new, so I am thinking it is time for some upgrades.

What else do you guys think I should be buying as good service parts? What would be your must buy parts if you were in my position (5000 miles away in Oxford)?

Oxygen and MAP sensors.

I seriously doubt that you would need to replace the intake manifold gaskets, those should never go bad. Exhaust gaskets are a different story!

Did you use anything like SeaFoam to clean the fuel system? If not I would suggest doing so on an annual basis.

Sparkplugs, ignition wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor, air filter, pcv filter, fuel filter, radiator hoses, fan belts.

Carry a spare ignition pickup coil and a module (if applicable for your application) to have just in case.

If a manifold gasket is really really blown out there is a remote possibility that you can warp a valve....

I would fix the manifold gasket because I hate the sound of a blown exhaust gasket.

I don't know how much it would impact performance but you should certainly hear a change in the exhaust sound. I have heard (but don't know if it's true) that if the leak is bad enough you can burn the exhaust valves. If someone has a definite answer to that question I'd like to hear it!

Hi all - does anyone know iif those Oxygen sensors were California Emissions specific? My coach was a Cali coach, but I'm not sure the VIN lookup is clever enough to sort this out.

Nick, according to the information I can find only one oxygen sensor was used and it's a one wire (non-heated) sensor.

Upstream means in the exhaust manifold or before the catalytic converter (if equiped).

I don't think you can go wrong buying an ACDelco AFS21.
