Parts lookup

Hi all,

I have been using the AC Delco site to identify parts to ship over to the UK. It allows you to do this by VIN, which is handy, and it seems to bring up precisely the right variant e.g. 1991 7.4 454 4L80E with engine type N......which is great. However, on a few items, when I key them into Amazon, it says the part doesn't fit my vehicle. A good example being the spark plugs. Amazon only looks up by make, year and P30, so it feels less sophisticated. On occaision, it asks for the engine variant.

Do you have any tips on how I can maximise my chances of ordering the correct bits? Do you think I can rely on the Delco site?

thanks
Nick

You might try Rock Auto. They have everything under the sun. I don't know if they ship overseas or not but I don't see why they would not.

Hi - thanks for the response. Rockauto do ship overseas and they are a good supplier, but they don't have VIN lookup. I'm trying to establish how reliable VIN lookup is eg on the AC Delco site for identifying the correct bits for the P30 Motorhome. It's complicated because I think they changed things in 1991, so i can't go by the year alone, which is what most sites, including Rockauto, offer

Nick, buying parts online is tough no matter how you look at it. At best you have pictures from the supplier to compare and unfortunately at times they don't even have pictures.

I basically try to do cross checking among various vendors to try and get a feel for what is offered. If they all offer the same thing for a given part the odds are in your favor. If you see a variety of different parts then you need to look closely at what you have and proceed with caution.

I have many parts sitting on the shelf for my Argosy that were purchased and ended up not being the right part. The sad part is it's usually cost prohibitive to return the parts. If I'm in doubt I try to buy locally so I can compare the parts.

Brad

I started a thread over in Land Yachts for parts I found that work... and don't. I try to post pics of relevant items.

For whatever reason, does not seem like a lot of interest. I have no idea why not, as this info is relevant to everybody with the same models, and very useful to those with similar models. This is an odd site like that - but not one comment, and no contributors.

I am just now heading out to three different stores returning non-fitting brake power booster, master cylinder, upper and lower ball joints, radiator hoses, brake cables, tie rod ends, windshield wipers, air filter, wheel bearings, seals, etc. By my receipts almost $600 worth of stuff. This is my 2nd round of returns. A couple weeks ago I returned a bit over $400 worth, mostly suspension stuff.

In the last few weeks I have returned via online merchants timing chains/sprockets, parking brake cables, brake hoses, power steering and oil cooler hoses.

If you can avoid it, highly recommended to remove the part you need, then look around local, comparing the old with the new.

Take a look over at the Land Yacht post and maybe you will get lucky...

For what it's worth, I have 2 returns (out of 4 purchases) going back to Rock Auto next week -

I'll have a look at your post. I agree that a thread with model, year, VIN and parts that fit as stock replacements would be useful. My strategy has been to use the AC Delco VIN lookup to identify parts that fit, try and cross ref that with the Motorhome chassis guide and then order. I won't be returning them because they are destined for the UK. Hoping for the best!

Cheers
Nick

One of your challenges relates to how the electronic cataloging websites work and get their data.

Vehicle identification be it make model year engine driven or sometimes by VIN, the medium duty class is somewhat of an afterthought. Cars and pickups rule the day.

Also the suppliers to the big web names create the data, but it all has to fit within someone's definition of a valid vehicle.

I'm not in the cataloging dept. at work but I see and hear about their struggles daily.

Very true.
On my last round of ball joints, I was using O'Reilly's, Auto Zone, and a local supply house to cross reference part numbers. Most were wrong.

Then I went to NAPA. Their cross reference was to a NAPA house brand, and the lowers fit fine - the other folks stuff (MOOG, Precision and ??, I forget now) stuff had either the press-in diameter wrong, or the taper on the stud was wrong. Scary thing about the taper was that it would fit: but you then had about 1/4" of space to makeup because it went into the spindle too far. Serious error, with potential deadly consequences.

Oddly enough, the uppers did NOT fit. Well, not quite true. They would have fit the stock upper a-arms. They did NOT fit the replacement MOOG a-arms I installed, that came with the wrong ball joints. Even MOOG did not have ball joints that fit the Land Yacht AND fit their own a-arms.

It gets worse: While I final found some uppers to fit, the rubber dust cover pressed fitting interfered with the mounting hole. I had to use the rubber cover that came on the O'Reilly's a-arm ball joint - which are not available separately. I even called the manufacturer for Precision Products, O'Reilly's house brand. So I had to purchase another a-arm just to get the stinking rubber boot...another $100.

I'm really glad this project is almost over...

Just to add. I think this process is pretty invaluable to anyone looking at parts for their coach:

Free VIN chevyy look up for chassis mnft date: http://chevroletforum.com/forum/vindecoder.php

Get your engine code and casting date from your 454 7.4L. You'll find reference here
http://www.chevyhardcore.com/news/re...sting-numbers/

Check out the AC Delco site, look up parts by VIN and cross check them with the chassis manuals

Hats off to Hatzie, what a guy!

Look at the year, P series or light truck manuals for your coach.

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=690988

Cross check to the GMpartswiki

I think this stuff is invaluable for people who want to keep on top (or underneath) their coach.

Hope this helps

PDF of Square Schematics & GM Training Manuals

** Added GM Delco radio manuals Oct 2015...

Over the years I have collected a bunch of GM service literature.
I own GM 1967-1980, & 1983-1991 GM Light Truck schematics as well as 1973-1991 GM Light Truck and 1984-1987 D-series CUCV Parts manuals. I also own many of the 67-91 Unit-Repair/Overhaul, Service, and Emissions Driveability Manuals.
Links to PDF Scans of service and STG manuals and a links to the Parts manuals. You'll need the FREE Adobe Acrobat reader to open these files. Get it directly from Adobe here {http://get.adobe.com/reader/}
If you're not interested in Adobe products there are several lightweight alternatives. wikipedia.org List_of_PDF_software
TechRepublic Review of five-lightweight-and-free-pdf-viewers/ an important fact they left out is... Foxit is Ad supported so factor that in.

Please Save these files on your local machine. Do not open in your web browser. The Mediafire PDF reader is not compatible with the Searchable PDF document type. The OCR text is visible along with the page image in the same space.

If you're good at loosing files Google "Void Tools Everything" and download direct from the developer. I've used this file search tool for years. It will find any misplaced file...

It looks like Mediafire has begun compressing PDF files as .gz GZIP archives. You can un-compress it with a universal file archive tool.
I use 7-ZIP because it opens darn near all archive formats, it's lightweight & fast, it's free, and so far it comes with no spyware or adware. http://www.7-zip.org.

Last and Not Least... These scans make a nice electronically searchable reference. But. I highly recommend buying used or even new paper copies. There's nothing like holding the book in your hands...

1973-1991 GM Light Truck Service, "Unit Repair" or Overhaul, and Wiring Manuals.

Notes;
-The earlier service manuals are interesting. They're geared toward troubleshooting rather than changing parts. They have a lot of basic procedure and theory of operation information you don't normally find in aftermarket and modern OEM service manuals.
-The Unit Repair and Overhaul manuals have in-depth GM re-build information on Axles, AC compressors, Hydro-Boost, Engines, Transmissions, and Transfer Cases.
-68-86 GM wiring manuals are 11.5"x36" fold-out pages. My scanner has a max page length of 34". These manuals require that I scan from each end, save as 0 compression TIFF, and stitch where the diagrams aren't real busy in GIMP 2.8 64bit.
-75 & 76 Light Duty Service & Overhaul Manual Supplement are supplements to 1974 Light Duty Service and Overhaul Manuals
-74, 75, 76 Medium & Heavy Duty service manuals are supplements to 1973 Medium & Heavy Duty Manuals.
-78 & 79 Medium & Heavy Duty service manuals are supplements to 1977 Medium & Heavy Duty Manuals.
-87-91 GM wiring manuals are A3 pages. I scanned these from cover to cover.
-87 wiring diagrams have an odd layout.
-81 & 82 8.5x11 GM wiring diagrams can be found in the back of the service manuals but these are a bit harder to follow as they don't carry the circuit from end to end on one page like the 11x36 pages.

Radios ********** NEW May 22, 2015
Before you download these manuals. You will need more than a passing acquaintance with electronics repair and a bench of electronics tools. This does not mean a 40W Radio shack soldering iron and a precision screwdriver set.
You will likely need at a minimum a good Benchtop DC power supply capable of at least 24v and 3A, VTVOM, Analog Volt Ohm Meter, Digital Volt Ohm Meter, Precision Temp Controlled Solder Station, and various hand tools... You may need a good Oscilloscope, frequency counter, and Audio signal generator.
If you think I'm trying to scare you... I am.
If you don't have all or most of the above tooling, lots of patience, and a fair amount of experience with electronics and your tools (you didn't just buy em)... farm it out to one of the many competent radio guys. You'll be many dollars, a bunch of frustration, and lots of time ahead.
I have been searching for these as a complete un-butchered GM Radio manuals for a very long time. Be aware that most "complete radio manuals" on Fleabay are not anything of the sort. The Manual Mafia separate these into the internal chapters, label the chapters as a complete manual for whatever radio is on the first page, and sell them one chapter at a time for $30-$50 a chapter. They are cutting a rare reference book into chapters and spreading them to the four winds.

Useful Docs and Spreadsheets
What follows is an Excel 97 spreadsheet I put together several years ago to calculate the Speedo gears and engine RPM at various highway speeds. I was doing a "What-If" on transmissions, tires, and axle gear-sets and wanted to get transmission/transfer-case speedo gears as close to correct as possible. My 76 reads 1-2mph higher than actual speed. If my speedo reads 35 the local police dept's "Your speed is this" sign will read 33 or 34.

For Speedo gears you only need to edit the Tire Size & Axle ratio. The speedo gear table will automagically calculate the ideal Driven and Drive gears.
You then get to find which ones you can actually buy. You can edit the ratio adapter section to get you closer... If the gears you can actually buy are not close enough.

For the RPM tables you'll need to edit the transmission and Transfer case gear ratios as well. There are tables of ratios found in common trannys and transfer cases in the RH pane.
• RPM_Gear_Axle_Transmission_TransferCase.zip archive with Excel 97 XLS format and Libre Office / Open Office ODS format.
• Screen Grab of RPM_Table_Spreadsheet.ods open in Libre Office Calc
The Free Apache Open Office Suite https://www.openoffice.org/ and Free Libre Office Suite http://www.libreoffice.org/ 4.x and newer Office Suites "Calc" Spreadsheet applet will open and edit spreadsheets in Excel 97(XLS) & 2007 and newer (XLSX) formats. I lean toward Libre Office because the dev cycle for bugfixes and new features is shorter. Google Docs should open it on the web as well.
.XLS files sometimes have visual formatting issues in Libre Office and .ODS files have formatting issues in some versions of Excel. They will both open in either office package but I included both for more appealing visual layout in the office package of your chioce.

There are no Macros or VB Scripts. It's just a spreadsheet with some fairly complex formulas and color formatting.
MAC OSX and Windows Operating Systems since Windows XP have been able to open ZIP files without extra software if the functionality is not disabled by system policies. If you want a Free Open Source Archive tool get the 7-Zip tool http://www.7-zip.org/ If you don't like using 7Zip from the command line in Linux there's a GUI called PeaZip

The Dorman site is also very good. It can distinguish more clearly between the coaches with the 16" and 19.5" wheels and the different brake set ups e.g. JB8 and JF9
