I need a new speedometer for my '88 345

I just got the bad news on my non functioning speedometer and it is the type that can not be repaired. The diameter of the dashboard opening seems to be irregular and finding a new replacement has proven difficult. Has anyone replaced their speedometer on a similar rig? and if so, any ideas or sources would be welcomed. My cruise control is also in-active but I am not sure if the broken speedometer is connected to that problem or something separate. Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions...Mr. D.

You can try custominstrumentpanels.com They stock some instruments that work with our panels. I have had good luck with them.
Good luck, Rob

The Summitt folks have some very cool all digital panels for custom installation. I've often looked at the mess behind the panel and though about a complete redo with a full digital setup.... but I digress.
GPS will give you speed as well as distance.... My Delorme Street atlas on the laptop is always on.
The low tech short term is little dymo labels on the tach for final drive speeds.
So many solutions.... so little money....

I don't know if your rig and my 1984 310 Limited use the same speedo. Mine failed and I got a replacement that didn't match but worked, I then had mine fixed and put back in. I'm 4000 miles from home at the moment so I can't look at the replacement which is on the shelf at home. I'd be happy to check it when I get home (late Oct.).

Also some folks have had good luck with these folks:

Cruise Control

The cruise control speed sensor is mounted on the rear left of the transmission. It has two wires running from it to the control unit. The speedometer cable attaches to the speed sensor, so if the speed sensor fails, it takes your speedometer with it.

If the speedometer does not work but the cable still turns without any cruise control does this also mean that the cruise control does not work also? Or do they work separately? Mr. D. Also has anyone any advise on what the best for the money dash mounted GPS unit might be?...and where I might find these units?

If the cable still turns then both the speed sensor and speedometer have failed. I use the Garmin Street Pilot. I fabricated a bracket so it sits on top of my dash right by the left windshield frame. I could hook it to a laptop, but would have to fight my wife for the laptop.

Please let me know when you return home and maybe we can work something out in regards to your spare speedometer. I assume the entire exchange depends on the diameter of yours fitting the diameter of mine as it fits in the dashboard. I assume they use the same type of cable, etc. Have a nice trip and give me a note at garry1rondi@aol.com..thanks Mr. D.

Mr. D.,
I'm back, are you still looking for a speedo?

I would like to get more details on the size and shape of your speedometer? If it has the proper dimensions I'd like to talk to you about working out a deal. Thanks for the write back...Mr. D.

Its a Stewart Warner 82677:

Round, 3 3/8 inches. Can't say that it matched my other gauges, only that it worked until I had mine repaired.
