Will a Honda fit? They are water cooled. Usually a water cooled engine runs cooler and at a more consistent temperature. Older Onan's ran at 1800 rpm which should make for longer engine life but most of the newer ones seem to be 3600 rpm, easier to keep noise levels low.
I plan to go Honda when the time comes (if it fits). I think Peter replaced his with a Honda and it's on the forum here. Found a Honda EV6010 on eBay for 2600. Not sure what labor would be. Seems like the Honda's make sense, lighter, smaller, less fuel burn and cheaper than Onan.
I've also heard of good deals on Onan take outs from RV Salvage Yards like Colaws and others
