Alternator/ Voltage reg

On our trip to the ocean this last week the tach started jumping around and the voltage gauge was reading right at 12 and not charging.
We replaced the voltage reg. hoping that was the problem but no. Belts are tight checked the obvious. We have the 83 Turbo Isuzu 6BD1 w/ 100,000K.
Voltage reg is a Nippondenso Has anyone replaced the Alternator and where do you find one. Most places here cna't help

I had the same type problem on my summer trip, but mine is not a diesel. It ended up being a wire that was burnt on the starter.
Not burnt through, but enough to play havoc with my electrical system. I also had to replace the battery isolator. Check your voltage readings in a few different places with a voltmeter, and see if they are consistent. i had readings across my battery isolator that were showing a sum of the two coach battery voltages and that was all.

Nippondenso products and components are use on some John Deere and Yanmar diesel engines. I have a Nippondenso starter and alternator on my John Deere 950 Diesel tractor. We have 5 30 KW generators with Nippondenso starters on 4 cylinder John Deere industrial diesel engines also.

Nippendenso is fairly common in the truck and industrial world. If you look for a rebuilder that does trucks they should have one or be able to rebuild the one you have.

This is one of the reasons I like using an older chevy. I purchased a 135 amp 1 wire alt. and did away with the external regulator. The thing works great.

I thought I would add this as well- I got my alternator from NAPA and paid 35 bucks for it. Starter also was form them and cost about the same. No problems with either unit. Easy to install as well. Chevy related parts are very reasonable, and readily available.

Well we found the parts the alt is from 824.00 - 1300.00 or we can take it to a local electrical place and they will rebuild it and re install for around 600.00. It has a vacuum pump attached also. Diesel does have its costs wow. Well we will keep checking.

Good luck. My experience with Nippendenso is what you have found, expensive and more expensive, and not the longest lasting. I am guessing this is small enough to be belt driven, if you make or have some one make a bracket to use a Delco and get a vacuum pump it would probably cost about the same this time, be an easy cheap fix next time.
