310 engine change diesel to gas, gearing question

Newbie here, been hangout for a year or more. I'm interested in a classic 310 that has an engine change from diesel to a 454 gas engine. Yes I know puzzling choice.

I haven't seen this unit in person. But it was mentioned here that if the transmission was from the diesel set up, that it would not work well with the gas engine.

My questions are, is the a significant difference between the transmissions of the two different engines? Are ther external marking to determine which type is in the unit? Could the difference be compensated for in the rear end gearing, rather changing the transmission? Interested in any relevant info.

Thanks. Richard

The differences are in the torque converter and valve body. What transmission does it have now? Turbo 400 or Allison?

That is a good question, but
I haven't seen the unit in person. Would the 454 even bolt up to the Allison?
The Moho is running now with the 454, so if the Allison has a bell housing that cannot mate up with the gas engine then that would seem to settle the matter

I'm trying to figure out as much as possible about this 310 to determine if I should make the trip to take a look.

The seller is just flipping it and has not owned or used the Moho enough to know much about its history or condition. He says ir runs and drives well.

Thanks for your reply.

Cheers Richard

I may have jumped to an inaccurate conclusion here.
Overlander63 mentioned the torque converter and valve body.

Can the gas engine also bolt to the Allison transmission?

I sure would like to learn more about this engine / transmission matching or incompatibility situation!

Cheers Richard

The Isuzu diesel does not bolt to the TH400 trans. Airstream fabricated an adaptor plate to mate the diesel to the trans. There is also a "plug" to mate the crank to the flex plate. I have not seen the Isuzu/Alison mate up but I would guess it would use a standard SAE bell housing as found on most trucks. The gas 454 would bolt directly to the TH400 but may need an adaptor plate to the Allison. The torque converter are pretty standard and are specified for the rpm range of the engine. The valve body changes are different strength springs that affect shifting characteristics and are external on the transmission. There are also many internal changes that can be made to the TH400 such as modern clutches and bands that were not available when the coach was built. A competent shop can make these changes during a rebuild.
