What is the Make of the car in your Title?

Hello, I am in a little unusual situation. Bought a 2013/2014 Interstate Lounge Ext 24, and could not register it in Denver, CO. Because with the VIN verification this is a 2013 Make: Merz, Body: MH, Model: Airstream, Fuel: Diesel. But in the original title (New Mexico) from 2014 (from the lady who I bought it from) it is a 2014, Make: Merc, Model: Air, Body: MH, Fuel: Gasoline.

This is certainly a mistake on the New Mexico DMW, and the lady who I bought it from trying to help me to sort this out. Errors and Resolution department got all the documents and trying to fix things. I was told in the Denver DMV that Merc stands for Mercury, and Mercedes Benz should be Merz. And obviously Fuel type is incorrect.

But just curious, considering that this is seems like a 2014 Airstream, but still a 2013 Splinter, what is the correct Make and Year should be? The original car, right? The only thing that Airstream changes is the Model.

Hope this is the only problem I will encounter in the near future

The US government uses Merz for Mercedes in the NHTS listings, so that is likely what the DMV should use. Merc is shorthand for Mercedes outside the US, particularly in the UK. Just like we might call it a Mercedes or a Benz, it would be called a Merc, as in “Jeeves, bring the Merc around front”. Maybe the data entry person was a Brit?

It gets worse. Merc is pronounced with both a soft c and a hard c, based on location. But there is also a Merk, which is a Merkur. Except in the UK, where it was called a Ford Sierra.

Welcome to the forum . . . I hope you can get this sorted out!

One word of caution . . . in dealing the various state governments, and DMV agencies, be very careful about your own spelling and avoid typographical errors like "Splinter" . . .

. . . and thanks for a good laugh . . .

In our state of Missouri u would make a appointment with the highway patrol and have them review your documents and the vehicle. They fill out the correct forms and off to the DMV u would go.

If you can, keep it registered in New Mexico as it will be much cheaper and perhaps easier.

My parents gifted me their car, but accidentally signed the Indiana title in the wrong place, and then crossed it out, initialed the mistake, and signed in the correct place. It took months to sort it out. :-| What I learned from the experience and my advice: it is worth the time and pain to visit several branches because different employees will have different opinions. After two people telling me I would have to procure all kinds of inspections and paperwork, a third person simply said, "oh, I see what happened here," and immediately issued a new CO title.

Not likely, but that's all part of the adventure.

Good luck getting the title sorted out at least that will be done indoors, not raining and at night.

I had a 2009 Winnebago ERA on a 2008 Dodge Sprinter chassis. The first title issued in CO listed it as a 2008, Winnebago window sticker stated 2009. I retitled it Nebraska and Nevada both DMV's listed it as an 08, never any problems or questions. When I traded it the dealership used the book value for 09 ERA because there were no 08's.

Each state is different. My Airstream Land Yacht is on a Freightliner chassis. When I bought it in NC, thats what the title said. When I later registered it in Montana, I failed to notice right away they listed it as a Freightliner. Now that I am in WV, they also registered it as a Freightliner because thats what the previous title said.

Its never really been a problem until I tried to get it into a military base. They were concerned the title/registeration did not match the vehicle cause NO-WHERE on the exterior does it say Freightliner. Had to bring them inside to see the horn button!!

Thank you all! Good to know, that my situation is not unique. I will give it a time for NM DMW to fix the documents, and after that will give it another try with DMZ, after that will try to call local Highway Patrol as well, to figure out what is the best plan of action.

In TN we showed them the how the description reads on the invoice. Ours is a 2015 chassis, 2016 Airstream. They registered it as 2016.
