Rear Bumper Storage Liner?

Has anyone come up with a good liner for the bumper storage compartment? Mine is bare metal and using it is just messy and hard to keep clean. Just look at what happens to an item that rolls around that compartment. It's been in there for maybe a year. The compartment is noisy, does not stay clean, and really needs to be lined. Something other then say Astro turf or carpet. Was wondering what others are doing to keep things from slipping around and keeping it quiet and clean. Something other then totes.

I used Grizzly Grip paint on liner. It comes in various colors.

Whatever you use remember to leave drain holes - the bumper lid is not water tight and the last thing you want is for it to fill with water.

Any kind of bed liner material should work. I keep a plastic shoebox or two for small stuff that needs to stay dry. That includes a bar of strong soap - for washing hands after stowing the stinky slinky.

Our AS had a sheet or rubber in the bottom when we bought. What I found was that the rubber was good for keeping moisture under it and allowing the bottom of the pan to rust. I have since coated it with Phospho. It contains phosphoric acid and reacts with steel to create a hard iron phosphate coating that helps minimize rusting.

Mine is stock and I have no problems. I keep a broom, the canopy tool, a fire poker, a folding ladder, 4 chocks and two hoses in it. If that stuff gets messy, no problem. It by far is a clean dry, compartment, perhaps by design.

I used "wheel well" under coating which is available at any auto parts store. I then cut to fit a thin piece of rubber matting. In fact I lined all the outside storage lockers with the rubber matting and sprayed parts of the outside lockers with the under coating. Looks good and easy to do.

I did drill a couple of small drain holes in the bumper floor. The rear bumper is not water tight.

I bought some indoor/outdoor runner mats from Home Depot. Enviroback Charcoal Recycled Rubber/Thermoplastic Ribbed Runner, or any other brand of the this type of runner/mat. I trimmed/cut it to fit the bottom of my storage compartment, and also put a piece on the inside of the compartment's door. I found that when I pulled items out from the compartment, onto the door it scratched like crazy. Also, it's easy to trim because the ribbing provides a straight line to cut alone. I attached the mats with double-stick Velcro tape, to hold it in place ... this doesn't do any damage to your Airstream and makes the mats easy to remove, if needed.

why not try that rubbery shelf liner they sell in rolls at wal-mart? it has holes for drainage and definitely would help the slipping and banging.
