Changing brake hoses is very easy, coupler spanners needed, no crimping tools requied.
After all that heat from the locked up front brakes, as you described, "wheels were hot to tough" "smoke" ect, so I'd be pulling thoes front wheel bearings before I'd be driving it again. Clean posible burnt grease out and repack bearings with good fresh grease.
Your neighbor wouldn't be to blame "if wrong" MC rod or for that matter for the moron that did the steering flex plate work, prob the same guy! your meant too retain your rod, rather than use the one provided from the MC reconditioners.
When it comes for someone to diagnose, its going to be tricky for them unless a lockup is occurring, even then???
There is another brake valve it's on the delivery side from the MC sitting ontop off the front cross member, it has a name, they call " proportional " it regulates different fluid pressures to front brakes, higher than to rear brakes, but I don't know enough about their possible misbehaviour in this case.
As I think Peter said, it seems like a lot off horrible things to know about GM chasis, maybe but once you'v sorted them, well they are sorted for a long time :} an you'll be giving others the benefit off your hard earned experience...
I'd Try and find the correct length for the rod online, maybe it's even been listed on this forum from the distant past. Or ask the GM brake recon people to find the shortest lenght appropriate rod??
Knee's/Brakes it's so unfare

Just read up on this thread,
1. Replace the brake hoses if you haven't already, when they get old the rubber can act like a check valve letting fluid in but not out, causing brake dragging
2. Bummer on that steering linkage, also scary, guess who's about to go outside and inspect his...
Hopefully not a big issues though
3. I had bogging down and easy stall issues too, when I pulled my fuel tank i found water in it

So, believe it or not, even though those photos suggest otherwise, that steering coupler isn't as far out of whack as it would appear. Evidently they just look kind of wonky, even when brand new (not just flat pieces, but lots of curves and angles). Granted, there's a bunch of grime and surface rust, but the "wavy" bits are supposed to be that way. Still... the issue is on my list, and now Supersteer Bell Cranks are now on my radar (and my Argosy Amazon wish list).
I'm looking at various flexible brake lines (and calipers) right now to hopefully get everything updated soon.
I had already cleaned out my tank and replaced all my gas lines and filters, so I don't think that's the issue. Another person who looked at the vehicle suggested it might be the little rubber thingy (so scientific! ) on the front passenger side of the carburetor needing to be adjusted. I still have more to learn about carburetors.

Yes, the coupler is very odd looking, I noticed that on mine too
For the water issue, how long ago was it cleaned?
My condensation cropped up pretty quickly, over about one year of no big trips

Couple months ago. plus, I'm in Colorado. There is no moisture in the air, let alone my tank. Also, the Racor fuel filter has a water separator.

Hmmm, no clue then. I solved all my carb issues by replacing it with a system I actually understand, sorry I can't be any more help there

I may go injection some day, but hopefully by that point I'll be running an all electric GMC Transmode 23'.
