Oxidized Bumpers

Hello,

We have a 1984 airstream 310 motor home. The bumpers are much oxidized. Does anyone have some suggestions on how to clean them? Hopefully without having to buff / polish them.

Thank you in advance for the help,

Johnny

They were originally clear coated aluminum and over the years the clear coat breaks down and they get ugly and oxidized. There is no magic solution, they have to be polished like any Airstream metal after it becomes oxidized and old gray looking.

Could try this stuff to remove oxidation before you polish…
Aluminum Wash - 1 Gallon Refill - Mfg# 10128

3M makes Scotchbrite buffing wheels for deburring and finishing. The 7S grade will leave a finish very close to the original brushed aluminum finish. The wheels are about 3 inches wide and 12" in diameter. They work well on a variable speed body buffer/polisher. I believe the part number is 2536. Wipe it down with acetone after buffing and coat it with some rattle can clear coat.

search for "started polishing my motorhome" in the polishing forum.

he has a step by step w/ pictures of his bumpers

they are easy to take off(be careful of the plastic end pieces tho)

& they are solid aluminum, so some wheel polish like Mothers and a buffing wheel bring it up to a high shine really quick.
