I want this....bad!!

NASA's famed "Astrovan" -- the silver Airstream motor home that carries astronauts from crew quarters to the launch pad -- is up for grabs. (File photo)

They are giving it away. The ultimate 280 is going to be given to a worthy institution. Shipping only is required.
I proclaim myself a worthy institutin...I would drive this all over and be happy to show it to schools, and at special events.
I still miss mine, but it is happily still in England.

I think that the Airstream Company needs to acquire this historically significant Airstream, and display it at the factory. In return, they could make a donation to a charity of NASA's choice.

In "my other life", I teach rocketry and space exploration. I have a classroom in Oberlin, Ohio. Our team travels around our area and surrounding states displaying items and building rockets with kids. We are responsible for teaching Space Exploration at the Boy Scout National Jamboree.

A couple of years ago, we acquired a space shuttle tire from NASA. The paperwork was unbelievable. I think I signed more things than when I bought my house.

I had to promise not to take the tire into a foreign country, because the technology might be stolen. Ummmm, it's a tire?

Anyways, I will be preparing full documentation requesting a number of items. The astrovan will be one of them, but I'm not holding my breath! I'll be very surprised if it makes it out of the internal selection.

Perhaps I could get a petition going on AirForums that the membership pledges to assist with the restoration and preservation of the unit!

Good find Alan! We should have a forum contest for the best idea.

We've got Airstream parks. How about an Airstream nursing home? It could be driven by a little old lady .. to church .. only on Sundays...

An Astrovan parked in my garage.

This got me thinking. I'm sure this will go quick. If someone can find the link to website for this let us know

Alan, you do work for an education facility . . .

I say give it a go for the great state of Georgia.

From the FAQs at GSAXCess® Practice Home - Welcome to GSAXcess® - NASA Space Shuttle Program - Historic Artifacts Prescreening:

Am I eligible to receive an artifact?
NASA, National Air and Space Museum (NASM) and other Federal agency representatives with access to GSAXcess have access to the module and may select artifacts for programmatic reuse or for entry into the Nation’s historic collection. State sponsored museums and educational facilities as well as other educational facilities with Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS) or National Center for Educational Statistics (NCES) registry are able to view and select property.

Shouldn't it go to the Smithsonian in DC?
